Historic Gold for India in Women's Recurve Archery at Asian Games 2026

In a remarkable achievement, India clinched its first-ever gold medal in women's recurve archery at the Asian Games 2026. The trio of Kumkum Mohod, Ankita Bhakat, and Kirti Sharma triumphed over South Korea with a score of 5-3 in the final match held on Friday. The young star, 17-year-old Kumkum, played a pivotal role, scoring two crucial 10s in the final moments to secure this historic win.

This was India's inaugural appearance in the women's recurve team final at the Asian Games, facing a South Korean team known for its dominance in the sport. The South Korean archers had three representatives in the top four qualification spots, while India's competitors ranked 10th, 20th, and 25th.

1. **First Set:** South Korea scored 54, but India matched it, with Ankita scoring 9, Kirti 7, and Kumkum a 10, resulting in a 1-1 tie.

2. **Second Set:** Both teams ended with 56 points. Ankita and Kumkum each scored 10, keeping the score level at 2-2.

3. **Third Set:** India took the lead with a score of 55-51, thanks to Kirti's 10, Ankita's 9, and Kumkum's 10, leading to a 4-2 advantage.

4. **Final Set:** South Korea initially led with 28 points, but Kumkum's perfect 10 leveled the set at 54, securing a 5-3 victory for India.

This gold medal marks a significant milestone for India in women's recurve archery at the Asian Games. Kumkum's consistent performance and Ankita's experience were crucial in navigating the pressure of the final.

Earlier, India defeated China with a score of 5-1 in the semifinals, paving the way for the final showdown against South Korea.

With this victory, India has now secured its 11th gold medal at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games, bringing the total medal count to 67, which includes 23 silver and 33 bronze medals. At the time of reporting, India ranks seventh on the medal table.

India's recurve archers have more chances to win medals later today. Kumkum and Dhiraj Bommadevara are set to compete in the mixed team semifinal against Japan, while Dhiraj, Neeraj Chauhan, and Yashdeep Bhoge will face Iran in the men's team semifinal. The mixed recurve team event also offers Olympic qualification opportunities, with the winning National Olympic Committee earning spots for the LA 2028 Olympics.
