Houston soccer fans have a big reason to celebrate as Dynamo legend Brian Ching prepares to receive two major honors recognizing his impact on the sport and the city.
Ching joined Houston Life alongside former Dynamo teammate and captain Wade Barrett to reflect on his career, the team’s championship years and his upcoming induction into the Houston Dynamo Ring of Honor . Ching will become the inaugural inductee during a halftime ceremony Saturday, Oct. 17, when the Dynamo host FC Dallas at Shell Energy Stadium for the Texas Derby.
The match kicks off at 7:30 p.m. Fans attending the game can also receive a Hawaiian lei at the stadium gates in honor of Ching, nicknamed “The Flyin’ Hawaiian. ” The recognition comes after a standout career with Houston. Ching spent eight seasons with the Dynamo, helping the club win back-to-back MLS Cup championships in 2006 and 2007. The six-time MLS All-Star remains the team’s all-time leading scorer, with 56 regular-season goals and 69 goals across all competitions.
Barrett, who played alongside Ching, recalled the forward’s ability to deliver in the biggest moments, including scoring four goals in Houston’s first match after the club relocated in 2006.
“He has a history of showing up in big moments for the club,” Barrett said, reflecting on Ching’s leadership and contributions to the team. Ching also opened up about the challenges that shaped his career. He explained that early struggles and doubts about his abilities pushed him to work harder, rebuild his confidence and learn from setbacks.
His message to young athletes is to understand that reaching the highest levels requires commitment and hard work, even when the journey gets difficult.
“It’s about getting back up,” Ching said, emphasizing the importance of learning from failure and continuing to grow. Beyond his accomplishments on the field, Ching has remained connected to Houston through his community involvement. The new Ring of Honor will recognize former Dynamo players, staff members and executives who have made a significant impact on the club and the city. Ching is also being inducted into the Houston Sports Hall of Fame, alongside former Houston Texans Defensive lineman J.J.
Watt and former Houston Astros pitcher Billy Wagner. Ching’s induction marks another milestone in a career that began on a small island in the Pacific and grew into a lasting legacy in Houston. The Dynamo enter the final stretch of the regular season looking to strengthen their position in the Western Conference standings. Saturday’s Texas Derby offers fans a chance to cheer on the team while celebrating one of the most influential players in franchise history.
