How are Skyhawks fall teams’ postseason prospects?

It’s the end of October, and that means postseason play is almost here for Fort Lewis College’s fall sports teams.

Well, that’s what the Skyhawks hope.

There’s less than a week left in the FLC soccer teams’ regular seasons. Volleyball and football have a few weeks left. So how are these teams’ postseason prospects with a few weeks remaining?

The women’s soccer team has clinched its spot in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference tournament. The men’s soccer team is close to clinching. Both hope to reach the NCAA Tournament. Volleyball is fighting to reach the conference tournament. Football doesn’t have a conference tournament and won’t reach the national tournament with four losses already, so it won’t be covered below.

So let’s take a look at where the soccer teams and volleyball are in the standings, their remaining schedules and potential postseason projections.

The Skyhawks men’s soccer program has won at least nine games the past three seasons, and it looks like FLC will make it four consecutive seasons at 8-4-2 overall and 5-2 in the RMAC with three regular-season games remaining.

FLC made the NCAA Tournament in 2023 and 2024 after making the RMAC tournament final both years. Last year was disappointing. Despite finishing the regular season 9-4-4 overall and 5-3-2 in the RMAC, the Skyhawks missed the conference tournament and then the NCAA Tournament.

This season, the Skyhawks are in much better position in third with three games remaining. Once again, FLC has a dynamic offense, led by sophomore Simão Agostinho and junior William Bretvik’s scoring abilities. Sophomore Francisco Pinto and junior Raul Baptista Filipe are the team’s main facilitators. The new back line has been good at times and mediocre at others, but still an improvement from last season.

CSU Pueblo leads the conference at 6-0-2 with 20 points. Regis is second at 5-1-1 with 16 points, and FLC is third at 5-2 with 15 points. UCCS is fourth at 4-2-2 with 14 points, South Dakota Mines fifth at 3-3-2 with 11 points, and Westminster is sixth at 3-3-1 with 10 points.

The top six teams make the conference tournament. The top two seeds get a bye; No. 3 hosts No. 6 and No. 4 hosts No. 5.

With three games remaining, the Skyhawks have a good shot to finish second. It’s not impossible that they could finish first, but CSU Pueblo plays last-place Colorado School of Mines and UCCS to finish, so the Thunderwolves should at least get a win against Colorado School of Mines. Plus, CSU Pueblo has two head-to-head wins against the Skyhawks.

FLC has a massive home game against Regis on Sunday. If the Skyhawks win and then beat South Dakota Mines and second-to-last Adams State, they’ll finish in second. If FLC loses to Regis, it’s likely that third will be the best the Skyhawks can do since Regis plays Adams State and Colorado School of Mines as its other two final games.

If the Skyhawks finish their final three games 2-1 with a loss to Regis, they’ll likely finish third since UCCS has to play CSU Pueblo and, in this scenario, the Skyhawks will have beaten current fifth-place South Dakota Mines.

Even if FLC only beats Adams State, it’s unlikely the Skyhawks drop out of the top four since they’ll finish with 18 points and South Dakota Mines can only finish with 17.

The scenarios get even more complicated with the NCAA Tournament. The Skyhawks are currently ninth in Super Region 4, with 10 teams making the NCAA Tournament from the region.

FLC can make it easy by winning all three of its games, including over Regis, the No. 5 team in the region. A win in the conference tournament after that would put FLC in a great position for an at-large bid. If the Skyhawks go 2-1 with a loss to Regis, they will still be around the bubble with a run to the conference tournament championship probably enough. If FLC goes 1-2 to finish the regular season, the Skyhawks might need to win the conference tournament for the auto bid.

The Skyhawks women’s soccer squad is having a stellar season and is on pace to match or pass last season’s 11 wins.

Despite losing five key defenders last year, the Skyhawks have another great defense. FLC’s offense is led by star freshmen Emma Gurule and Maleia Dayao, with senior Jenna Salazar as the top facilitator.

FLC is 9-3-2 overall and 6-3 in the RMAC. The Skyhawks have been consistently good, finishing 9-4-6 overall in 2023, 9-6-6 overall in 2024 and 11-5-3 in 2025. The Skyhawks want to be great again by making the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2015.

What’s tough for the Skyhawks is the top of the RMAC is loaded with great teams. Regis leads at 10-0 in the conference with 30 points. Colorado Mesa is second at 7-1-1 with 22 points, and UCCS is third at 7-2-1 with 22 points. Black Hills State is fourth at 6-3-1 with 18 points, and FLC is fifth at 6-3 with 18 points. Colorado School of Mines is sixth at 5-2-2 with 17 points, Westminster is seventh at 4-3-2 with 14 points, and Western Colorado is eighth at 3-5-1 with 10 points.

The top eight teams make the conference tournament. The top six of the current standings have already clinched their spots. The No. 1 seed gets a double bye to the semifinals. No. 2-4 host in the quarterfinals and No. 7 hosts No. 8 in the first round.

There’s a chance FLC could finish second in the standings with its final three games against teams below it in the standings. Regis is out of reach for FLC and likely the rest of the league. Colorado Mesa has a tough schedule remaining with games against Regis, UCCS and Westminster. UCCS also has to play Colorado Mesa and Westminster, and the Skyhawks have the head-to-head win against the Mountain Lions. FLC also beaten Black Hills State, and the Yellow Jackets have to play Regis and Westminster.

The Skyhawks have games at Colorado Christian (ninth in conference standings), at MSU Denver (10th) and vs. Western Colorado (eighth). If FLC wins all of those games, it has a great shot of finishing inside the top three and even second. A loss would max FLC’s point total at 24 points, which would drop the Skyhawks to at least third. Two wins and a tie would get FLC to 25 points, which could be good enough for second, depending on who wins the UCCS vs. Colorado Mesa game.

FLC has played very well against teams below them in the standings the last two seasons, so the Skyhawks have a great shot at hosting a conference tournament game for the second consecutive season.

Looking at the NCAA Tournament, the Skyhawks will need to win out in the regular season and win two games in the conference tournament to feel safely in. The Skyhawks are eighth in the South Central Region, and six teams make it with auto bids from the RMAC and Lone Star Conference.

A loss before the conference tournament and the Skyhawks will likely need a run to the conference championship game.

The 2025 season for FLC volleyball was fantastic in Year 1 under head coach Justin Wong, except for the end.

FLC finished the season 14-12 overall, 8-6 in the RMAC and made the conference tournament for the first time since 2022. However, the Skyhawks lost their last seven matches, including in the first round of the conference tournament.

Wong and the Skyhawks hope to finish this season much better. FLC is 11-9 overall and 5-5 in the RMAC. The Skyhawks struggled in the Angelo State Tournament, but bounced back by winning the CSU Pueblo Tournament. The Skyhawks have beaten the teams they’re supposed to in conference play, but they’re still looking for their first marquee win.

MSU Denver is first in the conference at 9-1. Colorado School of Mines, Colorado Mesa and UCCS are each 8-2. South Dakota Mines is 7-3 in fifth, Adams State and Colorado Christian are sixth and seventh, each at 6-4, and the Skyhawks are eighth at 5-5.

The top eight teams make the conference tournament, with the top four hosting in the quarterfinals.

FLC has six regular season games remaining, with four of those coming against teams around the Skyhawks in the conference standings. Two of those six games will be against MSU Denver and UCCS, which are likely losses.

There’s still a lot of wins available for the Skyhawks, but it’s likely they win enough to get into the conference tournament on the road as the seventh or eighth seed. FLC’s not in a position to make the NCAA Tournament, barring a miraculous run to the auto bid by winning the conference tournament.
