How to watch England v New Zealand for free as game moved from BBC Two

John Mitchell's side are hoping to bounce back after their historic winning run came to an end
How to watch England v New Zealand for free as game moved from BBC Two

England Women are looking to get back to winning ways as they face New Zealand in the WXV Global Series on Saturday.

The Red Roses' historic run of 39 successive wins came to an end last weekend as they were held to a 26-26 draw by Canada in a rematch of last year's Women's Rugby World Cup final. However, they are still unbeaten in 40 Tests and will be out for a win as they return to the Allianz Stadium this weekend.

However, while they have been a consistent fixture on BBC Two in recent times - regularly attracting record audiences to the broadcaster's coverage of women's rugby - their latest WXV campaign has not been shown on a mainstream BBC channel.

Instead, their matches have been relegated to BBC iPlayer, with Red Roses fans having to stream the fixtures while films and other sporting coverage have been shown on BBC Two.

When John Mitchell's side beat Australia 48-15 in their opening game of the campaign, those tuning into BBC Two were met with Lawrence of Arabia, while West Side Story and Warrington's Super League clash with Hull KR were shown instead of last weekend's draw with Canada.

This weekend, 1961 romantic comedy Lover Come Back will be shown on the channel instead of England's clash with the Black Ferns.

However, the game will still be available to be live streamed for free on iPlayer and the BBC Sport website and app, as well as the RFU's YouTube account. Coverage will begin at 2.35pm ahead of a 3pm kick-off.

Last week, England prop Hannah Botterman admitted the broadcasting arrangement is "not something we're particularly happy with", with the wider squad viewing it as "a bit naff".

“It’s tough,” she said. “It became the norm for us for a long time, so to go back on iPlayer isn’t ideal. I think it’s probably a bit regressive in terms of what we were pushing for.

“As players, it’s obviously something that comes up and everyone’s a bit like, ‘That’s a bit naff’ but ultimately it doesn’t really change anything for us.

“After the year last year and winning the Six Nations, it would have been nice to be supported by some free-to-air TV. It’s not something that we as a group massively talk about or think about – but it’s [also] not something we’re particularly happy with.”
