Nebraska vs. Michigan State: The matchup
The Huskers are listed as 5.5-point favorites on the road after dominating their way to a 3-0 start in their non-conference schedule with wins over Ohio (49-21), Bowling Green (56-7) and North Dakota (34-7). Nebraska enjoyed the home cooking in its early schedule by averaging 520.7 yards per game (No. 10 nationally), rushing for 263.0 yards (No. 12) and averaging 46.3 points (No. 10). The Blackshirt defense also made its mark by allowing just 118.0 passing yards (No. 7) and 11.7 points per game (No. 16) to fuel a balanced effort. Both units factored into last week’s 34-7 win over North Dakota, with Jamal Rule rushing for 119 yards and two touchdowns and the defense limiting the Fighting Hawks to 1-of-12 on third down, 5.6 yards per pass attempt and 99 rushing yards on 36 attempts.
The Spartans return to their home stadium in rebound mode after falling on the road at No. 3 Notre Dame (27-10) last weekend. The Michigan State defense did its job early and held the Fighting Irish to their lowest scoring output of the season, but Alessio Milivojevic and the Spartans offense struggled in the face of a talented Notre Dame defense. Milivojevic completed 9-of-17 passes for 123 yards and threw two interceptions, and Cam Edwards mustered 38 yards on 12 carries on a day where Sparty finished with 167 total yards. A return to Spartan Stadium, which was the backdrop for earlier wins over Toledo (30-20) and Eastern Michigan (35-7) could be a difference-maker after a solid showing and moral victory at Notre Dame.
