Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised the extraordinary determination displayed by Indian para-athletes throughout the competition. He acknowledged the collective efforts of the contingent and highlighted the inspirational significance of their achievements for millions of Indians.

In a message shared on X, the Prime Minister described the 114-medal achievement as India’s finest performance at the continental sporting event. He congratulated every member of the contingent for their exceptional determination and recognised the contribution of each athlete to the country’s historic success.

The Prime Minister emphasised that the accomplishments of India’s para-athletes extended beyond sporting medals. Their performances demonstrated perseverance, discipline and the ability to overcome challenges through sustained effort. He also recognised their influence in encouraging aspiring athletes and strengthening public appreciation of para-sports across India.

The Indian contingent concluded the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Para Games with an impressive collection of 30 gold, 35 silver and 49 bronze medals. The total of 114 medals established a new national record at the competition and secured India fourth place in the overall standings.

The achievement represented a significant improvement over India’s previous best performance at the Hangzhou Asian Para Games, where the country’s final recognised medal tally stood at 108. The 2026 campaign also demonstrated India’s ability to compete successfully across several sporting disciplines.

Indian athletes secured medals in para athletics, para badminton, para swimming, para table tennis, para archery, para shooting, para judo and para powerlifting. Their performances reflected the increasing depth of India’s para-sporting talent and the emergence of competitive athletes across multiple disciplines.

Para athletics emerged as India’s strongest discipline at the Asian Para Games 2026, contributing 65 medals, including 22 gold, 19 silver and 24 bronze. The outstanding performance of Indian track-and-field athletes played a decisive role in establishing the country’s record medal tally.

Para badminton also made a substantial contribution, with Indian players securing 16 medals, comprising three gold, five silver and eight bronze. Indian para-badminton athletes demonstrated their competitiveness through strong performances across several categories.

Para swimming added 11 medals to India’s tally, while para table tennis contributed seven. Para archery accounted for six medals, followed by five in para shooting. Indian competitors also secured two medals each in para judo and para powerlifting.

The breadth of these achievements demonstrates that India’s progress in para-sports extends beyond individual disciplines. Athletes across different sporting categories contributed to a collective performance that established a new benchmark for the country.

The fifth edition of the Asian Para Games took place in Japan from 18 to 24 October 2026, with competitions organised across Aichi Prefecture and Nagoya. The event brought together para-athletes from across Asia to compete in a wide range of sporting disciplines.

The closing ceremony was held at the Mizuho Park Athletics Stadium in Nagoya on 24 October. Indian double gold medallists Nishad Kumar and Mona Agarwal led the country’s contingent as flag-bearers during the ceremony, marking the conclusion of an exceptional campaign.

The Games provided an important continental platform for para-athletes to demonstrate their abilities, compete at the highest regional level and establish new sporting records. India’s fourth-place finish reflected the strength of its performances against established para-sporting nations across Asia.

India’s record-breaking performance at the Asian Para Games 2026 represents an important milestone in the country’s sporting development. The achievements of its para-athletes highlight the value of sustained training, competitive opportunities, specialised coaching and access to suitable sporting infrastructure.

The success also brings greater attention to the importance of encouraging sporting participation among persons with disabilities. India’s growing international achievements can inspire young athletes to pursue competitive sports and encourage institutions to strengthen opportunities for talented para-sportspersons.

The 114-medal haul provides a strong foundation for India’s preparations for future continental and international competitions. With athletes delivering outstanding performances across multiple disciplines, the country has demonstrated its capacity to build a competitive and increasingly diverse para-sporting contingent.

India’s historic campaign at Aichi-Nagoya 2026 stands as a celebration of sporting excellence, determination and national achievement. The accomplishments of its para-athletes have established a new standard for Indian para-sports and strengthened the nation’s ambitions on the international sporting stage.
