'India should not have closed door': Former coach questions Mohammed Shami’s exclusion

Former India bowling coach Bharat Arun has questioned the decision to overlook Mohammed Shami, arguing that the experienced pacer still has plenty to offer Indian cricket.
Shami has remained out of India’s plans for an extended period, with his last international appearance coming in the Champions Trophy. Despite continuing to produce strong performances in domestic cricket, the 36-year-old has not been recalled, raising doubts over his future with the national side.
The situation also follows a public disagreement between Shami and chief selector Ajit Agarkar last year. After Shami was left out of the Test squad for the West Indies series, Agarkar raised questions about his fitness. Shami responded by pointing to his participation in the Ranji Trophy as evidence that he was fit enough to compete.
With Shami now set to feature in his 100th first-class match during the Duleep Trophy final for East Zone, Arun believes the veteran fast bowler deserves greater respect for his performances and longevity.
Arun said selectors should not have ruled Shami out based on his age, particularly when he continues to perform at a high level. He also highlighted the pacer’s remarkable durability and his ability to remain effective with the red ball.
Shami has also been overlooked on occasions when Jasprit Bumrah was unavailable, with the Indian team management instead opting to back younger fast bowlers.
However, Shami's determination to return to international cricket remains evident. East Zone captain Ishan Kishan recently praised the veteran pacer's intensity and work ethic, saying Shami even asked for additional overs in search of wickets.
Kishan also noted a renewed hunger in Shami during the current domestic season. According to him, the pacer appears highly motivated to earn another opportunity with India and is working with the mindset of making a comeback to the national squad.
For now, Shami continues to make his case through domestic cricket, with his performances keeping alive the possibility of another India return.
