India vs West Indies 2nd ODI preview: Kohli show sets up series-clinching chance in Guwahati

India will look to seal the three-match ODI series against the West Indies when the two sides meet in the second match at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati on Wednesday.

India head into the contest with confidence after a high-scoring victory in the series opener at Thiruvananthapuram, where Virat Kohli produced a spectacular unbeaten 139 off 88 balls and captain Shubman Gill struck a century to power the hosts to a successful chase of 297.

The West Indies, however, showed enough with the bat to suggest that India cannot afford to take them lightly. John Campbell scored 62 off 60 balls and Justin Greaves made 101 off 108 as the visitors raced to 135 without loss inside 19 overs before India fought back.

Kohli’s sensational hundred was the defining moment of the opening ODI. The former India captain took the attack apart during his unbeaten knock, while Gill provided the perfect support with 110 from 108 deliveries.

Rohit Sharma also made a positive start at the top, scoring 32 off 35 balls, and India will hope their experienced batting core can once again provide a strong platform in Guwahati.

The Barsapara Cricket Stadium could provide another favourable setting for the batters. India have won both their previous ODIs at the venue, with Kohli scoring centuries in both matches. Rohit has also enjoyed a strong record at the ground, having registered a century and a half-century.

All four ODI innings played at the venue have produced totals above 300, suggesting another high-scoring contest could be on the cards.

While India’s batting dominated the headlines in the first ODI, Kuldeep Yadav played a crucial role in turning the contest around with the ball.

The left-arm wrist-spinner finished with figures of 4-40 after the West Indies had raced to 135/0 in 19 overs. His wickets helped India regain control and eventually restrict the visitors before completing the chase.

Nitish Kumar Reddy conceded 45 runs from his spell, while debutant Naman Dhir went for 33 in five overs. Gurnoor Brar completed his 10 overs without a wicket, conceding 60 runs.

With Mohammed Siraj and Auqib Nabi left out of the playing XI for the opening ODI, India’s team management could consider changes to the bowling combination for the second match.

With the series within reach, India could use the second ODI to give opportunities to players who missed the opener.

Dhruv Jurel is among the players who could come into consideration, while Yashasvi Jaiswal is another option if the team management decides to strengthen the batting line-up.

The final combination will depend on India’s balance and conditions at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium.

The West Indies will take confidence from their start in the opening ODI despite eventually losing the match.

Campbell and Greaves put India under pressure during the first half of the innings, with Greaves converting his start into a century. The visitors will need another substantial batting effort while finding a way to contain an Indian line-up that includes Kohli, Gill and Rohit.

A victory in Guwahati would level the series and set up a decider, making the second ODI an important opportunity for the West Indies to respond.

India will enter the second ODI with the opportunity to wrap up the series, but the West Indies have already demonstrated that their batting can put pressure on the hosts.

With a high-scoring venue, India’s formidable top order and both teams coming off an entertaining opening game, another run-heavy contest could be in store in Guwahati.
