India vs West Indies 5th T20I: Batting concerns ahead of series decider; Bhuvneshwar added to squad

India face West Indies in the 5th T20I decider in Bengaluru with the series tied 2-2. Samson, Iyer and Kuldeep Yadav are key talking points.

India will look to address their batting concerns when they face the West Indies in the fifth and final T20I at Bengaluru’s M Chinnaswamy Stadium on Saturday. With the five-match series level at 2-2, both teams have everything to play for, but the hosts will enter the decider under pressure to deliver a complete performance.

The first four matches have produced plenty of runs, with the West Indies proving far more competitive than India might have expected. However, the high-scoring contests have also exposed weaknesses in India’s batting order that could become costly in the series finale.

While Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma have produced flashes of brilliance at the top, the middle order has struggled to maintain momentum. India will need greater consistency from their batters if they are to overcome an aggressive Caribbean side and secure the series.

India’s opening combination remains a concern heading into the decisive match. Samson and Abhishek have registered three half-centuries between them during the series, but their partnerships have returned scores of 29, 42, 7 and 60.

Their stand in the fourth T20I in Hyderabad was particularly uneven. Samson contributed 56 of the 60 runs, while Abhishek managed just two. Once the partnership ended, India’s middle order failed to build on the start, leaving the team short of the consistency required in a demanding run chase.

The struggles have not been limited to the openers. Ishan Kishan, captain Shreyas Iyer and Naman Dhir have all missed opportunities to make substantial contributions.

Iyer began the series with a commanding 102 in the opening T20I at Lucknow, but his subsequent scores of 40, 1 and 16 have raised questions about his recent form. Although he is not under immediate threat of losing his place, the series decider presents an important opportunity to demonstrate his ability to lead the side through a difficult situation.

After defeats on tours of Ireland and England, Iyer had regained ground with series victories over Zimbabwe and Afghanistan. A defeat against the West Indies would add pressure following a campaign in which the visitors have consistently challenged India’s batting unit.

Kishan has shown glimpses of his potential but has not converted his starts into substantial innings. After scoring 43 and 37 in his earlier outings, he managed only six in the fourth T20I. His dismissals against Roston Chase and Keemo Paul have prevented him from making the most of his opportunities.

Dhir has also struggled to find his rhythm, recording scores of 4, 10 and 0 in his three appearances.

India’s middle order must also improve its boundary-hitting ability during the crucial middle overs. In Hyderabad, Tilak Varma and Nitish Kumar Reddy went 18 balls without finding a boundary between overs 12.1 and 14.4 while chasing a target of 249.

That slowdown allowed the required run rate to climb, forcing the batters to take greater risks. India eventually failed to keep pace with the demanding target, underlining the importance of maintaining scoring momentum even when wickets are not falling.

India could consider bringing Kuldeep Yadav back into the playing XI for the series decider. The left-arm wrist-spinner has been left out of the third and fourth matches, but his experience could prove valuable at a venue known for its batting-friendly conditions.

The M Chinnaswamy Stadium is traditionally challenging for bowlers because of its flat pitches and short boundaries. However, the ground has not hosted an international match since the first Test against New Zealand in October 2024. Apart from a handful of IPL matches, there has been limited high-profile cricket at the venue during that period.

The conditions could therefore offer some uncertainty for both teams, making India’s selection decisions particularly important.

Arshdeep Singh and Axar Patel have worked hard throughout the series, but the run-heavy surfaces have limited their impact at times. Prince Yadav, Mayank Yadav, Dhir and Reddy have also found it difficult to contain the West Indies batters.

Kuldeep could offer India another option in the middle overs, particularly if the visitors’ leading batters settle in.

West Indies captain Shai Hope and Sherfane Rutherford have been central to the visitors’ strong showing. Hope has accumulated 261 runs in the series, while Rutherford has scored 221, placing them first and second in the batting charts.

India will be keen to dismiss both early rather than allow them to build another substantial partnership. Their influence was evident in the previous matches, with the Caribbean side repeatedly putting pressure on India’s bowling attack.

The hosts will draw confidence from their 14-run victory in the third T20I at Indore, when they managed to keep the West Indies in check. Repeating that performance will be important if India are to regain control of the series.

A series victory would provide a significant boost for the West Indies, who have recently announced several measures aimed at reviving cricket across the Caribbean islands.

With both teams level at 2-2, the final contest could come down to which side handles the pressure more effectively. India have the home advantage, but their inconsistent batting means they cannot afford another collective failure.

🚨 REPORTS 🚨 There is a high chance of rain during tomorrow’s 5th T20I between India and the West Indies at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium! 🏟️🌧️ #Cricket #India #T20I https://t.co/YHEfTbBVEC

There is also the weather to consider. Rain has been affecting Bengaluru over the past few days, leaving conditions as an additional factor ahead of Saturday’s match. If the weather permits a full contest, India will need their top order to fire, their middle order to accelerate and their bowlers to find ways to contain two of the series’ most dangerous batters.

India have added experienced pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar to their squad for the fifth T20I against the West Indies in Bengaluru on Saturday, October 17, 2026, after Arshdeep Singh sustained a shoulder injury during the previous match.

According to a release from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), Bhuvneshwar has been brought into the squad as a precautionary measure ahead of the series decider at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium.

“The Men’s Selection Committee has added Bhuvneshwar Kumar to the India squad for the fifth Muthoot FinCorp T20I against West Indies. The final match of the ongoing T20I series will be played at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru on October 17, 2026,” the BCCI stated.

The release also clarified the circumstances behind the experienced pacer’s inclusion.

“Bhuvneshwar Kumar was added to the squad after Arshdeep Singh sustained a blow to his bowling shoulder during the fourth T20I of the series against West Indies on Wednesday in Hyderabad. A decision on his participation for the final T20I will be taken before the game based on his recovery.”

India and the West Indies are currently level at 2-2 in the five-match series. Arshdeep’s availability will depend on his recovery, while Bhuvneshwar could provide India with an experienced fast-bowling option for the crucial encounter.

India’s updated T20I squad: Shreyas Iyer [C], Abhishek Sharma, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, Ishan Kishan [WK], Sanju Samson [WK], Tilak Varma [VC], Shivam Dube, Kuldeep Yadav, Axar Patel, Ravi Bishnoi, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Arshdeep Singh, Prince Yadav, Mayank Yadav, Naman Dhir, Bhuvneshwar Kumar.
