In tragic news, the death of South African rugby player Hyron Andrews has been confirmed. The 31-year-old is said to have died in the Johannesburg Lions' team hotel on the eve of a Champions Cup game against La Rochelle.
The Lions had been preparing to make their debut in the top-tier tournament this weekend. On the morning of Friday 16 October, however, Andrews was found unresponsive in the shower. Efforts were made by paramedics to resuscitate him but were ultimately unsuccessful, with Andrews being pronounced dead at the scene.
Tributes have been made within the rugby community, and an immediate investigation has been launched into his death at the Atalante-Relais Thalasso hotel on the Île de Ré.
As per Wales Online, an investigation into Andrews' passing has already started. The report explained that the public prosecutor of La Rochelle, Arnaud Laraize, confirmed to AFP that he had opened an investigation into the cause of death. He added that the hypothesis of an accidental death is currently being given priority, before confirming that an autopsy will be performed.
La Rochelle prosecutor's office told French media:
"He was found unresponsive in a shower cubicle located in the hotel's spa area.
"The shower was locked from the inside. There are no signs of violence on his body, and the involvement of a third party is not currently considered a likely scenario. An investigation into the cause of death has been entrusted to the gendarmerie."
A statement from SA Rugby, via The Guardian, said the lock forward had “passed away tragically” after an accident in which he fell.
Tributes have been paid to Andrews, 31, who also played for the KZN Sharks and Sale Sharks. Mark Alexander, president of the South African Rugby Union, said: “This is terrible and distressing news; our hearts go out to Hyron’s family and the whole Lions rugby community.
“There are no words to adequately convey our shock and the depth of sympathy we feel for his wife Maighlin, and for his extended family, friends, teammates and loved ones during this time of immense sorrow.
“Hyron was a respected member of the rugby community whose contribution to the game and impact on those around him will be remembered with great fondness. His untimely passing is a devastating loss, and we share in the grief of all who knew and loved him.”
The Lions also posted an emotional tribute online, saying: “It is with broken hearts that we mourn the passing of Hyron Andrews, a valued member of our Lions family. Our deepest condolences are with Maiglin, Hendrix, Emerson and the entire Andrews family during this incredibly difficult time.
“Rest in peace, Hyron. You will always be part of our family.”
