Irish-Qualified South African could solve major problem for Ireland

Irish-Qualified South African could solve major problem for Ireland

It’s fair to say that by the end of the next World Cup, there’s going to be a big rebuild of the Ireland squad for Andy Farrell.

While the main focus for now should be 100% on winning a quarter-final in Australia, it would be remiss not to acknowledge the glaring age profile of the Ireland squad post-2027.

With key starters like Josh van der Flier, Jack Conan, Tadhg Furlong, Tadhg Beirne and Jamison Gibson-Park all well over 30 already and highly unlikely to be impactful much longer after 2027, the IRFU and Farrell need to keep in mind the future past the World Cup.

The one major position Ireland will be in serious need of rebuilding is the centres. Farrell has chosen to stick to the reliable quartet of Bundee Aki (36), Stuart McCloskey (34), Robbie Henshaw (33) and Garry Ringrose (31) for the majority of test matches, with Jamie Osborne (24) being the only younger player to be given a shot in the midfield since the last World Cup.

Even the likes of Tom Farrell, who earned his Test debut last year after a great start to life at Munster, are on the wrong side of 30 and not likely to stick around at the top level long.

And that’s where the little-known Jonathan Roche comes in, as reports have emerged that the 23-year-old Stormers centre has an Irish passport through his paternal grandmother and is sounding out a move to an Irish province when his contract in Cape Town expires at the end of the season.

Roche is a 6ft2 inside centre and has broken out for the Stormers in 2026, so far starting in every game for a side boasting Springbok stars Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu and Damien Willemse in the backline. He most recently scored two tries in the Stormers’ 49-12 win over Bristol Bears in the Champions Cup.

He has been on the Springboks radar despite being uncapped, earning a call-up last year for Rassie Erasmus’ alignment camp, but could now be joining a growing contingent of South African-born Irish-qualified youngsters on these shores.

The IRFU have tapped into the South African market a few times over the past 18 months, most notably former Springboks U18 captain Josh Neil, who has joined the Leinster academy and was a key player in the U20s Six Nations Championship earlier this year.

Centres Rynard Gordon and Rourke O’Sullivan have also made the move from South Africa to Ireland, joining Ulster and Connacht respectively.
