Israel Adesanya Reportedly Set for Shara Magomedov Showdown at UFC Saudi Arabia

Former two-time UFC middleweight champion Israel Adesanya could be preparing for a return to the Octagon in December, with a reported showdown against Russian fighter Shara Magomedov expected to headline the promotion’s upcoming event in Saudi Arabia.
According to Canadian combat sports journalist Ariel Helwani, the long-rumoured middleweight contest is set to top the UFC’s third event in Saudi Arabia, scheduled for December 5 at the anb Arena. However, the matchup has yet to be officially confirmed by the UFC.
For Adesanya, widely known as ‘The Last Stylebender’, the reported bout could offer an opportunity to revive his career following a difficult run of results that has left the former champion searching for a return to winning form.
The Nigerian-New Zealander last secured a victory in April 2023, when he knocked out longtime rival Alex Pereira to reclaim the UFC middleweight title. Since then, his fortunes have changed dramatically, with defeats to Sean Strickland, Dricus du Plessis and Nassourdine Imavov preceding another knockout loss to Joe Pyfer in March 2026.
The latest setback prompted calls for the 37-year-old fighter to consider retirement, but Adesanya dismissed suggestions that his career was over, leaving the door open for another run in the highly competitive middleweight division.
Magomedov, an unranked middleweight prospect with a reported professional record of 17 wins and one defeat, has openly expressed interest in facing the former champion.
The Russian called out Adesanya following his victory over Michel Pereira at UFC Baku in June, a result that improved his promotional record to 6-1 and strengthened his case for a higher-profile matchup.
A potential fight against Adesanya would represent a significant opportunity for Magomedov to establish himself against one of the division’s most accomplished strikers. It would also give him the chance to secure the high-profile contest he has been pursuing.
Magomedov’s only professional defeat came against Michael ‘Venom’ Page, who outpointed him on the undercard of Adesanya’s previous UFC Saudi Arabia main event approximately 20 months ago.
That result could provide an intriguing reference point ahead of a possible meeting with Adesanya. Page’s movement and striking proved effective against Magomedov, and the former champion may look to exploit similar openings if the matchup goes ahead.
Adesanya built much of his championship reputation on his precise striking, defensive movement and ability to control distance against elite opponents. Reproducing those qualities could be crucial as he attempts to end his prolonged winless run.
The UFC’s return to Saudi Arabia has undergone scheduling changes since its announcement, with December 5 now set as the event date.
The promotion’s previous visit to Riyadh in February 2025 featured Adesanya against Imavov in the main event. The Nigerian-New Zealander suffered a knockout defeat in that contest, adding another setback to an increasingly challenging period in his career.
A return to the Middle East against Magomedov would therefore carry both sporting and personal significance, giving Adesanya a chance to respond to his previous defeat in the region.
For Magomedov, meanwhile, the contest would offer a chance to defeat a former champion whose experience at the highest level could provide a major test of his development.
Although the UFC has yet to make an official announcement, the reported matchup has already raised questions about Adesanya’s next chapter and whether he can recapture the form that once made him one of mixed martial arts’ most dominant middleweights.
If confirmed, the December showdown could prove pivotal for both fighters: a potential career revival for Adesanya and a major breakthrough opportunity for Magomedov.
