“It’s Extremely Reckless”: Dave Portnoy Calls Out Caleb Williams for “Texting and Driving” Ahead of Bears vs. Patriots

The Chicago Bears took on the Super Bowl runners-up, the New England Patriots, on Thursday Night Football at Soldier Field in Chicago. However, a viral video from before the game has fans online talking.

Bears star Caleb Williams, also dubbed ‘Iceman’ by fans, was spotted using his phone while driving by a fan who waved at him from their car. Michigan fan Dave Portnoy was quick to call out Williams over the interaction for his ‘reckless’ behavior in a social media post on X (formerly Twitter), saying:

“I think regardless of who you are rooting for tonight we can agree it’s extremely reckless for Caleb Williams to be texting and driving. Im not saying the league should suspend him for a half but maybe if Ben Johnson is the leader of men Bears fans say he is he makes a point about driving safely. Some things are bigger than sports.”

While Portnoy stopped short of calling for a suspension, he suggested Bears head coach Ben Johnson should make a point about driving safety.

Williams earned the NFC Offensive Player of the Week Award after a stellar win over the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday, throwing for 305 yards and a touchdown to lead his team to a 31-23 victory.

However, Johnson wants Williams to perform consistently every week. Speaking in a press conference on Monday, Johnson said:

“He put together a good performance. And the key with him and the rest of the guys is to stack good performances back-to-back-to-back. That’s what the good ones do.”

The Bears lead the Patriots 20-14 at halftime, with Williams throwing for 167 yards and a touchdown, and D’Andre Swift adding another score with a rushing touchdown.
