James Roby’s Brad O’Neill verdict as Wigan Warriors star backed for England spot after Man of Steel award

Wigan Warriors star Brad O’Neill is only the fourth hooker to be crowned Man of Steel since James Roby won the award in 2007
James Roby’s Brad O’Neill verdict as Wigan Warriors star backed for England spot after Man of Steel award

Wigan Warriors star Brad O’Neill has been backed to be England’s number nine at the Rugby League World Cup.

The 24-year-old hooker was crowned this year’s Steve Prescott MBE Man of Steel at the Rugby League Awards Night, with the final decision made by a panel of five former winners - Ellery Hanley MBE, Paul Sculthorpe MBE, Joe Lydon, James Roby and Sam Tomkins – who all took to the stage as O’Neill received his award.

St Helens icon Roby, who won 39 caps for Great Britain and England, believes O’Neill should be England’s starting hooker at this autumn’s World Cup.

“I look across Super League, and I think who would challenge him or take his place, and there’s not many, only a couple of names that come to mind if you like,” said Roby.

“I think Brad should definitely be playing in the World Cup for England, and a starting hooker for me in terms of his style, physical presence, and the magnitude of the international games as well.

“There’s no two ways about it, international is a step up, especially against big opposition like New Zealand or Australia. It’s stronger, it’s faster, it’s more physical, it’s quicker, there’s a bigger occasion and atmosphere in the stadium - that all adds and takes emotional energy from you as well.

“Brad has been at Wigan, such a successful club where he’s used to those environments and big-pressure moments in big games.

“I think he’s ready for it, he’s primed, and it could be his time.”

O’Neill was crowned the Man of Steel after beating strong competition from Wigan teammate Adam Keighran and Leeds Rhinos star Lachie Miller.

“We’ve talked about Brad throughout the year, and all the segments of the season, and what he has done for Wigan has been hugely influential,” Roby added. “He’s so pivotal, and he’s kind of grown as a leader and a go-to man for that Wigan team.

“I’m a big fan of the way he plays the game. His quality and service of pass, bringing his forwards onto the ball, his decision-making around the ruck, his guile, his deception, and he backs that up defensively as well, and that’s a real trademark of his.

“He’s a worthy winner, and I don’t think there'll be many that disagree with us.”
