Jamie Carragher says Coventry City getting their season up and running with their first three points is “massive” for the Premier League.
The former Liverpool star turned pundit knows that Frank Lampard and his Sky Blues player will feel the benefit from Saturday’s narrow 1-0 win at Nottingham Forest, particularly going into the three week international break.
Commenting on City’s weekend success which means all three promoted clubs have got wins on the board after five games, Carragher said: “I think it’s massive for the league. I really hate when we have got teams marooned at the bottom, certainly the promoted teams. I think it’s brilliant for the league when the promoted teams come up and make a fist of it.
“We know they’re going to lose lots of games and concede goals. It’s going to happen. But I think at the start it’s nice to think that they feel part of the Premier League. And when you see Frank (Lampard) there, and you know what, he’d have been feeling it. He’ll say in his interviews that he’s not but when you see the other teams picking up points, Ipswich and Hull, he’ll have been thinking that he just wants to feel good going into this international break.”
Speaking on his Jamie Carragher Podcast for Sky Sports, he added: “And sometimes you need a little bit of luck, and you think of the VAR decision late in the game. And listen, it probably was a foul but it’s one of those where sometimes they look at it and think there wasn’t too much in it and you can just see the relief on the players at the end of the game.
“Yes, Forest will be disappointed but I think for Coventry, and all the promoted teams to have a win under their belt going into the international break is great for the league, because we don’t want to go back to the situation where we had two or three years running where the three promoted teams came up and went back down. But not just went back down, but only getting 25 points, something like that.
“So you want them to make a real fist of it and hopefully that’s the case this season.”
