World No. 1 Jannik Sinner will miss the remainder of the 2026 season as he undergoes treatment for an ongoing knee injury.

The Italian has been sidelined since defeating Alexander Zverev in the Wimbledon final in July and has now confirmed that he will not return to competitive action this year.

Sinner was unable to defend his US Open title and will also miss the remaining tournaments where he won titles in 2025, including events in China, Vienna, Paris and the ATP Finals.

The prolonged absence is also expected to cost Sinner his position at the top of the ATP rankings.

Zverev is currently 1,280 points behind the Italian in the live rankings and is expected to overtake him before the end of the year.

Sinner announced his decision on Instagram, saying he had consulted with doctors before opting for a course of treatment.

“Me, together with the doctors, have decided that I need a course of treatment for my knee, which means that the 2026 season is officially over,” Sinner said.

“The last couple of years, especially the end ending in Turin, gave me so many beautiful feelings and emotions, and this year is going to be way different.

“But at the moment, I also need to think about my long-term career.

“I will do everything possible to get back 100%. I thank you already in advance for your support and hope to see you very, very soon on [the] court again.”

Despite the injury setback, Sinner has enjoyed an exceptional 2026 campaign. His Wimbledon triumph came after five consecutive Masters 1000 titles between March and July, making him the first player in the series’ history to achieve the feat.

Sinner has won all six finals he contested this year and has posted a 94 percent winning record, the best of his career.

His 2026 season has therefore been statistically stronger than the previous two campaigns, during which he won two Grand Slam titles and the ATP Finals in each season.

Sinner’s management team said he would undergo treatment for inflammation in his knee to allow him to recover before beginning preparations for the 2027 season.

The 25-year-old is expected to focus on recovering fully, with the Australian Open in January viewed as a potential target for his return.

For Sinner, the priority now is to address the knee problem and protect his long-term career after another dominant season at the top of men’s tennis.
