Japan’s Pickleball Boom Gains Momentum as Thousands Try the Sport

Around 330,000 people in Japan have now tried pickleball, highlighting the sport’s rapid rise in the country. With companies investing in courts and equipment and the sport’s governing bodies merging, Japan is building a stronger foundation for long-term growth.

A new survey suggests that around 330,000 people in Japan have now tried pickleball at some point. That number sounds huge, especially compared to a much smaller estimate from just a year earlier. But before getting too excited about the figure, it's worth understanding what it actually means.

It counts anyone who has played the sport even once, not people who play regularly or belong to a club. So while interest is clearly booming, it's really a story about curiosity spreading fast, not necessarily a story about hundreds of thousands of committed players just yet.

What makes Japan's growth interesting is how different it looks compared to how the sport took off in America. In the US, pickleball grew mostly from the ground up, neighbours introducing neighbours and local courts slowly filling up. In Japan, big companies are stepping in early and shaping how the sport is being introduced.

One tech company has been holding early morning pickleball sessions with clients before the workday even starts. The idea is simple, most people have never played before, but within about half an hour they're able to join in a match. For a company built around professional relationships, that's not just a fun activity, it's a new way to build connections without needing years of practice like a sport such as golf usually requires.

That same company later opened a dedicated court facility in Tokyo and was surprised by how quickly it filled up with bookings, even before it officially opened. It's a clear sign that finding places to actually play is becoming one of the bigger challenges as interest grows in a country where space is limited and expensive.

Equipment makers have taken notice too. A major Japanese sports brand recently entered the pickleball market, bringing in technology from golf and tennis to design new paddles and shoes, and setting real sales targets for its first year in the space.

On top of all this, Japan's two major pickleball organisations have merged into one unified body, giving the sport a clearer structure and stronger backing as it continues to grow.

Taken together, it paints a picture of a sport that is being built carefully and deliberately, rather than one simply riding a wave of sudden popularity.
