Joe Scarborough: White House Will Hate the Success of Tennis Star From S**thole Country of Maryland

This editor's wife is a HUGE tennis fan. If the TV's on, chances are there's a tennis match on. She's currently watching every moment of the U.S. Open in New York and, like many in the crowd, rooting for Frances Tiafoe, an American. On Tuesday, Tiafoe, or "Big Foe" as he's affectionately called, won a grueling five-set match against fellow American Alex Michelsen and advanced to the semifinals.

On Wednesday morning, the crew of MS NOW's Morning Joe was talking about the match, and host Joe Scarborough opined on how some people in the White House will hate the story of an immigrant coming from what they call "s**thole countries" and becoming a great American.

Morning Joe on Frances Tiafoe advancing in the U.S. Open: “For some reason, some people in the White House hate the story of immigrants coming from places they call shitholes & becoming great Americans, that are great examples for our own children.”

That's a hot take and all, considering that Tiafoe was born in Maryland. His parents immigrated legally from Sierra Leone in the 1990s and are both U.S. citizens. We're not sure that "some people" in the White House are too upset with Big Foe's victory.

I can’t imagine the emptiness of someone’s life who watches this and connects it to politics in any way.

While I agree MD is a shithole state, where Tiafoe and I were born, Morning Joe didn’t need to rub it in.

There was probably a better way for Morning Joe to call Maryland a shithole.

You are an imbecile. That isn't ad hominem, it's observation. Tiafoe has lived in the US since birth. And we love immigrants who don't break the law to get hear; who want to live as an American.

No. That's not true, but nice try. We're sick of rule flouters while there are people who've done it the right way and who do not contribute to society. This is obviously not the case.

Maryland is, indeed, a total shithole.

And they found some way to make this about President Donald Trump. Here's hoping the kid from Maryland wins his first slam in his home country in front of a cheering American crowd.
