Kirk Herbstreit says college football is ‘upside down’ as former NFL player eligibility fight heats up

BATON ROUGE, LA (FOX Carolina) - ESPN college football analyst Kirk Herbstreit shared strong words on the current state of college athletics, calling the sport “upside down” and questioning the logic of allowing former professional athletes back into college sports.

His comments come amid a high-stakes legal battle in Baton Rouge between LSU and the Southeastern Conference (SEC) over whether former NFL players should be allowed on college rosters.

“It doesn’t make sense to me for somebody to go to the NBA, let’s say have an NBA jersey on, and then have the ability to come back and play college basketball,” Herbstreit said. “And the same would be true to me in the NFL.”

To Herbstreit, keeping professional players out of college sports is a matter of “common sense.” However, he acknowledged that local court rulings and injunctions have completely disrupted the traditional framework of the game.

“College football is upside down, and it has been for a number of years,” Herbstreit said. “And I don’t know how we’re ever going to get out of it.”
