Kobe McDonald's remarkable season brought to shuddering halt, while Dublin giants fall and Oak Leaf kings reign again

The GAA county championships have thrown up a number of shocks this weekend, with a series of big hitters eliminated
Kobe McDonald's remarkable season brought to shuddering halt, while Dublin giants fall and Oak Leaf kings reign again

Kobe McDonald’s latest championship campaign is over after Garrymore edged past Crossmolina Deel Rovers 0-14 to 0-12 in their Mayo SFC quarter-final clash.

McDonald will return to Australia at the start of November to continue his AFL career with St Kilda. On Saturday he scored late on for Crossmolina to put them 0-12 to 0-11 ahead.

But Garrymore refused to panic.

Eoin McGreal levelled before Mark Gibbons and Cathal Slattery landed the scores that sent Garrymore into the last four.

Castlebar Mitchels had already booked their semi-final place after a convincing 0-19 to 1-10 win over Aghamore.

The 31-time champions led 0-13 to 0-5 at half-time, with James Durcan and Paddy Durcan leading the charge.

Elsewhere, Breaffy, the club of Aidan O’Shea, beat Westport 2-18 to 0-18 while Ryan O’Donoghue’s Belmullet defeated Claremorris 5-13 to 0-20.

Castleknock dumped Kilmacud Crokes out of the Dublin SFC championship with a 0-17 to 0-14 victory at Parnell Park.

There was little between them for much of the afternoon, with Castleknock holding a slender 0-9 to 0-8 lead at half-time.

Rob Shaw, Kevin Stephenson and Dylan Clarke were among their scorers, while Paddy O’Connor, Cian O’Connor and Aidan Jones replied for Crokes.

Castleknock edged further ahead after the break but Kilmacud came roaring back, with Paul Mannion and Paddy O’Connor helping the champions draw level with 10 minutes remaining.

Then Castleknock found another gear, with Ciaran Kilkenny instrumental.

The result ended Kilmacud’s hopes of winning a 12th Dublin title.

Holders Ballyboden St Enda’s also reached the semi-finals after overturning a four-point half-time deficit to beat Clontarf 0-17 to 0-14.

Clontarf led 0-9 to 0-5 at the break but Ryan Basquel and Colm Basquel helped turn the game around after half-time.

Dublin stars Con O’Callaghan and Charlie McMorrow also impressed as Cuala defeated Skerries Harps to reach the last four.

Thomas Davis produced another surprise by defeating Ballymun Kickhams by three points and will meet Castleknock in the semi-finals.

Slaughtneil continued their remarkable dominance of Derry hurling by claiming a 14th consecutive championship title with a 0-20 to 1-14 victory over Kevin Lynch’s at Owenbeg.

The holders raced into an early 0-8 to 0-3 lead, with Brendan Rogers, Cormac O’Doherty and Conor Doyle to the fore.

Kevin Lynch’s fought back before Rogers was sent off in the 25th minute, leaving Slaughtneil just three ahead at half-time.

The holders responded after the restart through Shea Cassidy, Seán McGuigan and Shane McGuigan.

Jerome McGuigan and Shane McGuigan then hit back-to-back scores before PJ Glover put six between them late on.

Kevin Lynch’s grabbed the only goal in injury-time, but Slaughtneil held on and are now on 20 Derry SHC titles, just three behind Dungiven on the county roll of honour.
