Lake Region sports roundup: Devils Lake football finishes non-region play 3-1

Devils Lake football’s matchup with Fargo South on Friday was essentially over in the first half.

The No. 4-ranked Firebirds completed non-region play with a 3-1 record, grabbing their third consecutive victory with a 32-7 blowout of the Bruins (0-4) on the road. So far, the defending Division AA state champions’ season has followed the same progression as last year.

The Firebirds gelled while using both of their primary quarterbacks: Talan Gregory and Ben Brodina. They even swapped out multiple times in a single drive at one point.

Running back Egan Laite had another solid game, with 128 rushing yards. He’s up to 715 rushing yards through four games.

Laite notched a six-yard touchdown to open the scoring. Brodina, on his first drive at quarterback, unleashed for a 69-yard run to make it 13-0 in the first quarter. Devils Lake’s defense, meanwhile, got quick stops on South’s first three possessions.

The Firebirds used up most of the second quarter driving the ball from their own seven-yard line. Using Brodina, then Gregory, then Brodina again at quarterback, Devils Lake eventually scored on a one-yard sidestep by Brodina into the end zone. It was 19-0 at halftime.

In the third quarter, Gregory completed a 24-yard touchdown pass to Domingo Engberg, who was under coverage. Gregory handed off the ball to Easton Encinas five times in the fourth quarter, the last of which was a two-yard run into the end zone to make it 32-0 with 5:50 left.

South only scored with about a minute left in the game, after the clock had already begun running. The Bruins totaled just 31 rushing yards.

Devils Lake will begin region play on Friday in Jamestown against the Blue Jays (1-3) at 7 p.m.

In other news, New Rockford-Sheyenne/Maddock won its 30th consecutive game in nine-man football and Four Winds picked up a key win over Nelson County, running away with it in the second half after a close start.

Lake Region State College volleyball also had a good weekend, going 4-0 and picking up a couple of notable player milestones.
