Argentina's Lionel Messi has won the Laureus Award for best male athlete of 2022 on Monday, ahead of names such as Rafa Nadal, Kylian Mbappe and Steph Curry, boosted by his performance in the Copa America and his return to Barcelona.

The Laureus Awards are considered among the most prestigious in the world of sports, recognizing the best athletes and teams of the year in various categories. Messi's win marks his second Laureus Award, having previously won in 2019.

Other winners of the 2022 Laureus Awards include tennis player Emma Raducanu, who won the Breakthrough of the Year award, and Lewis Hamilton, who won the Athlete Advocate of the Year award for his activism and advocacy for social justice.
