Liam Broady confirms what his relationship with Andy Murray was really like during their time on tour together

Andy Murray and Liam Broady are two of the most recognisable names in British tennis.

Murray won three Grand Slam titles and held the number-one ranking, and Broady has played nine major tournaments and reached the third round of Wimbledon twice (2022 and 2023).

But how did Murray and Broady get on during their time on tour together? Appearing as a guest on ‘The Changeover Podcast‘, Broady shared details of their relationship.

“I actually got a text message from him two days ago. I had not heard from him almost since he retired. I was doing some commentary, and this was the first time in almost a year, and he texted, ‘Good call picking Arthur Fery’. On commentary, I said I thought Fery was going to win the match,” said Broady.

“‘He didn’t win a point after you predicted he would win. You’re a dreadful pundit’. I spoke to him after that. And then, four days later, randomly out of the blue, ‘Remember when I rag-dolled you on Centre Court?’ He’s such a funny guy. He has such a dry sense of humour, but he was a massive influence on me.

“During COVID, I was struggling so badly with my game. My game was just rotting away, decaying. I was just so obsessed with trying to make the court, and my technique was falling apart.

“I remember he sat me down in the cafe at the NTC [National Tennis Centre] and he said, ‘You know that you probably aren’t going to make it playing how you are now’. I said, ‘That’s fair’. I was going through a stage of really bad results. He said, ‘Why don’t you start taking some risks and gamble and see where you can go?’ It was such a simple one-minute conversation, but I guess maybe it coming from him, and also the fact that it was completely factual and logical.

“I do like to take risks in life, so I thought you are completely right. I am not going to make it where I want to go by just putting the ball in the court. So that kind of started my roll to achieving the things I achieved in the last six years, and I actually qualified for the French Open, which was my first Slam I ever qualified for, maybe two or three months after that conversation.”

Broady’s form improved dramatically after speaking with Murray; however, the good times didn’t last. Broady hasn’t reached a Grand Slam main draw since the 2024 Wimbledon Championships. At his worst, the British veteran dropped out of the world’s top 750.

Battling back, playing futures and Challenger Tour events, Broady now finds himself ranked 233rd. He was ranked high enough to play Grand Slam qualifiers at Roland Garros, Wimbledon, and the US Open this season, but failed to win a match.

Whether he can do so in 2027 remains to be seen. His recent form does leave a lot to be desired, though…

Broady had lost nine consecutive matches before playing his first-round at the Guangzhou Nansha Challenger event against world number 620 Dominik Palan.

Picking up his first win in 104 days, Broady defeated Palan, 6-7, 6-4, 6-2, to reach the second round. He will have an opportunity to book his place in the quarter-final when he plays Japan’s Akira Santillan on Thursday, October 22.
