Lincoln Sports Foundation opens new volleyball courts amid effort to revitalize complex

LINCOLN, Neb. (KOLN) - The Lincoln Sports Foundation cut the ribbon on its new volleyball facility Wednesday, featuring four new courts in a 20,000 square foot indoor space.

LSF officials said the new courts come after the completion of six hardwood basketball courts last year, building on the foundation’s larger effort to beef up the sports facilities it offers to the community. The courts were funded through a number of private donations, as well as grants from Lancaster County.

Dan Lesoing, President of the LSF, said the goal is to provide opportunities to young athletes around Lincoln by giving them a place where their teams and organizations can play.

“We don’t have any programming. We don’t want any programming,” Lesoing said, “cause we don’t want to be competition for other programs. What we want to do is partner with people that need space.”

Since taking over the complex in 2015, LSF said it’s been steadily revitalizing the 200 acre property to serve more than 40 local sports organizations and community partners, giving young athletes the chance to play in recreational leagues, regional tournaments and national championships.

Nick Cusick, chair of the advisory committee, said Wednesday that he’s impressed with how far the complex has come in recent years, particularly compared to what it looked like decades ago when he was the Chair of the YMCA Board of Directors.

“At that particular point in time, and it’s probably 20 years ago, the facility was a mess to be totally honest with you,” Cusick said. “To see what has happened just in the last handful of years, under Dan and the board’s leadership ... it’s really quite something.”

Lesoing said there’s currently more plans in the works to continue upgrading LSF spaces, including remodeling the main lobby and expanding restrooms, spectator accommodations and a mezzanine to better accommodate increased attendance and larger events.

Those projects are expected to start this winter and continue into spring.
