Arsenal were left licking their wounds on Tuesday night as they suffered a shock EFL Cup fourth-round exit to League Two Fleetwood.

Mikel Arteta's Premier League champions have won seven of their first eight Premier League fixtures, though, and will be looking to serve up a response against Liverpool at Anfield.

However, the Gunners have a dreadful recent record on the red side of Merseyside and Liverpool have settled well under manager Andoni Iraola, suffering only one defeat in eight league games to suggest that they may have a part to play in the title race.

Last season’s Premier League meetings ended 1-0 and 0-0 and just two of Arsenal’s 14 games this season have gone over 3.5 goals.

The Liverpool left-back committed three fouls in last weekend’s win at home to Brighton and has been booked five times in 13 appearances for club and country this season.

Gakpo has returned from injury with three strong performances and had six shots against Brighton, hitting the target twice, before scoring in Wednesday’s EFL Cup clash with Chelsea.

Mikel Arteta was calling the shots on the field the last time Arsenal won at Anfield and the Gunners will need to show some discipline if they are to end their hoodoo on Merseyside.

The Premier League champions crashed out of the EFL Cup on penalties against League Two strugglers Fleetwood on Tuesday and significant improvement will be required if they want to win at Liverpool for the first time since 2012.

Arteta did take the opportunity to rotate his side at Fleetwood but Kai Havertz, Viktor Gyokeres, Jurrien Timber and Piero Hincapie all started, Martin Odegaard was introduced at half-time and Eberechi Eze also came on, so there was no excuse for their embarrassment at Highbury.

Tuesday's match once again showed that for all the quality within their ranks, Arsenal may lack the firepower and cutting edge of their fellow European elite.

Another injury to Bukayo Saka isn't going to help in that regard so Arteta may have to rely on his trusted defence to carve out victories, something which lends itself to low-scoring matches.

Liverpool’s forward line currently looks stronger than Arsenal’s but the Gunners are a well-oiled machine at the back, keeping eight clean sheets in 14 outings this season.

Five of the Gunners' eight away games this season have produced no more than two goals and their two meetings with Liverpool last season ended goalless at the Emirates and 1-0 to the Reds at Anfield, where Dominik Szoboszlai's stunning free-kick secured victory for the then champions.

Liverpool were also taken to penalties in midweek but they were able to see off Chelsea in a shootout to reach the EFL Cup quarter-finals and their sole defeat this season came at home to Manchester City, who scored three goals after Ryan Gravenberch was sent off midway through the second half.

Andoni Iraola has guided his revamped Reds to eight wins in their last 11 matches and they have every right to be feeling confident after last weekend’s 2-0 victory at home to Brighton.

The Seagulls managed only one shot on target and the arrival of impressive centre-back Jeremy Jacquet has certainly taken some of the pressure away from Virgil van Dijk, with the pair combining for four league clean sheets this season.

Liverpool have been involved in some chaotic Champions League fixtures but their last six league games have featured a total of just 11 goals.

Four of those rewarded backers of under 2.5 goals and top-of-the-table clashes are often tactical affairs.

Saka's absence should make Milos Kerkez’s task slightly easier but Liverpool's left-back can still be too eager to retrieve possession and that could lead to a card.

The Hungarian has been booked three times for the Reds this season and committed three fouls in last Sunday’s win over Brighton, taking his tally to 13 in eight league appearances.

Kerkez was booked in two of his three appearances for Hungary during the last international break and the direct running of Noni Madueke could still provide him with a torrid time.
