Man Utd fans split on claiming Man City titles but agree Premier League should void trophies

Manchester United supporters have had a lot to say on Manchester City’s reported guilty charges.
Manchester City’s titles are all under scrutiny after The Athletic reported they will be found guilty on 114 out of 115 Premier League charges they are facing.
The landmark case opens a can of worms over potential punishments and sanctions on City. Everything is on the table including relegation – possibly more than just one division.
There is debate over whether the trophies and titles they won should be stripped and voided – and then handed to the clubs who finished next in line.
There is precedent for this. In Italy in 2005/06, Juventus were stripped of their title and relegated after financial irregularities, and the trophy was later awarded to Inter Milan.
For the period of time relating to City’s charges, Manchester United finished second twice in 2012 and 2018, and would theoretically be owed two more league titles.
But the question we have been asking is, do you want them? Or is simply taking them away from City enough?
United 'finished second' in 2012 and 2018 for the period related to City's 115 charges
Manchester United fans have been voting in our poll on TalkingPoints and there is a split response. At present, 60 per cent of fans want the Red Devils to be awarded City’s trophies, while 40 per cent say ‘void the titles, nobody wins’.
One fan called for successive relegations for City, with the titles re-awarded to the teams who finished below them.
Another supporter agreed that the titles should be stripped from City, but felt they should simply be voided with no winner assigned.
Another comment also read ‘give them to the team who was cheated’, and raised the question of financial compensation. Manchester United could join other teams by lodging a lawsuit against City for loss of earnings.
A fourth comment pointed out that while stripping City of their titles sounded ‘great’, he questioned the fairness of such a call on the players who achieved success on the pitch. Of course, going back to the Juventus precedent, this was not a consideration for the Serie A authorities.
For now the football world awaits the formal announcement of the legal case against City. Punishments and sanctions will follow – but possibly with a delay.
It is almost certain that City will appeal the verdict, which will drag the case out further and further into the distance.
