Coventry City face Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium in a 3pm kick-off
Manchester City vs Coventry City live team news and match updates from Premier League clash

Frank Lampard felt his team deserved a draw after taking Manchester City the distance in Coventry City’s first ever visit to the Etihad Stadium.

While City produced the one decisive moment, a thumping first half header from Erling Haaland, the Sky Blues had their own opportunities.

Taiwo Awoniyi should have done better with a one-on-one and Jack Rudoni and Ellis Simms were denied by point blank saves from Gianluigui Donnarumma.

Lampard insisted he wouldn’t be too hard on those players but noted the difference in quality from what his side used to face in the Championship.

“A good performance from us, disappointed to lose the game, I felt we deserved something from it, probably a draw, I think, is a fair result,” he said.

Coventry City produced a gutsy and organised display in their first ever visit to the Etihad Stadium but their search for a first Premier League point goes on.

The Sky Blues were beaten by a thumping first half header from Erling Haaland but having had something of a rude awakening in their first away game at Arsenal, they were far more stable and competitive in this one.

While the financial disparity between the teams was clear for all to see on the pitch and the substitutes' bench, on the field of play the visitors gave as good as they got and might have taken a deserved point had they taken even one of several good chances.

Very brave and determined from the Sky Blues.

They had their chances - and at this level they'll have to take them - but far more positive than the Arsenal game.

Five minutes and the Sky Blues are still in this, they're attacking as much as City are, can they find that one moment of class?

Great ball in from the right from Yirenkyi which breaks to Simms at the back post, his shot from inside the six-yard box hits the 'keeper in the face.

Got to say, this is all Sky Blues at the minute. Lampard has pressed the 'go for it button' and the home side is rocking.

Brilliant hold up play by Taiwo who controls a bouncing ball and threads a pass in behind for Tchaouna.

The ex-Burnley winger angles his shot across Donnarumma but it's tipped away.

Seconds later Grimes fizzes a shot wide from the D.

Thomas-Asante is on for EMC and Simms replaces Awoniyi. Come on City, there's something here for you.

The Ghanaian's first contribution is to pop up in midfield and overhit a ball in behind for Awoniyi.

Before that a free kick had sparked a scramble in the home box which Amenda did well to sustain by returning the ball into the danger zone. Unfortunately it came to nothing.

Foden is on for Cherki by the way, that's a bit easier then. Not.

Lampard has gone to his bench, it's Tchaouna for Rudoni and Yirenkyi for Onyeka.

It'll be interesting to see how the latter gets on against this opposition.

He blew me away in pre-season against Monaco but looked a little lost against Arsenal.

City thought they had a second goal as Haaland's flick on went over the back to Fernandez who did well to hook back across goal and lay on a tap-in for the striker.

The Argentine was way offside from the initiail header though.

City are nice and compact for the most part, very deep but their shape is good.

When they do have the ball they could do with just a little more from EMC and Rudoni to really make an impression on the home defence.

Even with that, though, they are being absolutely lauded by the travelling support who are making a right din, all of the noise in fact.

City fans sit on their hands while Sky Blues' claps theirs and sing and sing and sing.

The BBC are reporting Elliot Anderson is challenging the record for the most passes attempted in a Premier League game.

It's currently 188, set by former Manchester City midfielder Rodri against West Ham in February 2021.

So far Anderson has managed 79 in the opening 45 minutes.

Not by what we've seen so far, the Sky Blues have had their fair share of possession since the restart.

Back out, no changes and the Sky Blues have made an assertive start, on to the front foot by lumping a couple of balls into the home box.

Really, really well-battled Sky Blues.

Thomas, Amenda and Pinnock need to go and have something isotonic - and maybe a bit stronger - they've been magnificent.

In fact every Sky Blues player has put in a shift.

What might have been had T or Rudoni converted very good chances, though.

Well done Carl Rushworth, City cut through the middle again, with Cherki (I think) flicking Anderson's pass into the path of Haaland.

The Norwegian escapes Thomas and fires across goal but Rushworth stuck out a hand and deflected the ball up for himself to catch.

2-0 would have been a very steep mountain to climb. 1-0 is just a big hill.

It's getting hard for the Sky Blues now, they're really finding it very difficult to get out at the moment. City are dominating the ball and pinning them in. Every time there's a turnover there's no real outball other than hoping Taiwo beats two central defenders of EMC can be found over the top.

Ten minutes to half time and I bet Lampard would happily skip it.

Such a shame for City, Rudoni hadn't long forced a point-blank save out of Donnarumma - but Cherki had also hit the post.

Lampard's men were opened up down their left as Fernandez set Semenyo away to the byeline. He did superbly to lift a cross to the back post where Haaland came steaming in, in front of Amenda to thump home a header.

I was just going to write how settled the Sky Blues look, they’re very compact and City are having troubling getting through them, or round them for that matter.

Then in the blink of an eye Anderson takes a quick free kick and threads it through for Rayan Cherki who advanced a couple of strides and releases Haaland in the area. His left-footed shot is turned aside by Rushworth.

The goalkeeper then has to be alert as a ball over the top finds Semenyo in behind. The winger takes it down but Rushworth slaps it away. The offside flag went up, anyway.

For the record van Ewijk has just been booked for pulling back Ndiaye.

City are starting to ask more questions

Huge chance for City. Semenyo plays a terrible pass from the wing back into the centre circle and it’s intercepted by Awoniyi who races clear, up to the edge of the box and with only Donnarumma to beat he skims a low shot wide. He’s got to take that.

Just before that Donnarumma let a back-pass run under his foot and almost over the goal-line.

Just after that City needlessly give away a corner which Rudoni curls in on to the diving head of Bobby Thomas but his attempt is blocked.

The Sky Blues have had their opportunities.

That is genuinely laughable, unless they're doing it to be ironic.

The Man City fans have just asked 'Where were you when you were ****?'

I mean, the absolute irony in that, they have to be joking.

Obviously the only riposte is 'Where were you when you were ****?'

It looks like what the current coaching jargon would have you believe is a 5-box-1, with Rudoni and EMC ahead of Grimes and Onyeka but quite narrow.

However, when City cross the halfway line they move wider and it becomes a flatter 5-4-1.

For Man City, Enzo Fernandez is not playing deep alongside Anderson, he's pushing on as a No. 8 when his team have he ball.

Pinnock is going to have to be alert to those late, Lampard-esque runs into the box.

Amenda is on the right of the back three and Pinnock on the left.

City in off white and hot coral.

The home side in their light blue tops and white shorts.

Scratch what I was saying about Enzo Fernandez being £125m worth of bench warmer. He's a late change to the starting line-up after Nico O'Reilly went down in the warm-up.

The Argentine will start alongside Elliot Anderson - just the £240m between them.

Hopefully he'll be less, erm, abrasive without an Argentina shirt on. I'll try not to boo him myself.

The PA announcer has just run through the home team and obviously Haaland and Ruben Dias - as captain - were given big cheers - but the loudest was reserved for Enzo Maresca. They clearly have good memories of him.

Plus he's won both of his two games so far.

With that the Sky Blues fans start singing about Frank Lampard.

The teams are about to come out.

Ethan Pinnock makes his first start since his transfer from Brentford.

The 34-year-old brings with him the experience of 118 Premier League games. He's played against Man City six times and won twice. He scored the winner against them in the 90th minute in May 2023.

Erling Haaland scored twice the last time they faced off.

Anyway, past performances are no indicator of the future and all we can do is recall Keith Andrews' glowing recommendation a few days ago.

bet365 are offering the latest match odds - which illustrate just how difficult this could be for the Sky Blues.

It's most likely to be a 4-2-3-1, with Elliot Anderson and Nico O'Reilly in the double pivot and Semenyo, Cherki and Ndiaye playing behind Haaland.

Their bench is remarkable. Enzo Fernandez, Ayyoub Bouadddi both arrived towards the end of the window, that's £210m sitting, waiting to come on and make their mark.

Let's not mention Phil Foden or Matheus Nunes or four time Champions League winner Meteo Kovacic. It's a different world the Sky Blues are stepping into.

So Frank Lampard has opted for a back five, with Ethan Pinnock handed his first start, alongside Bobby Thomas and Aurele Amenda.

Milan and Jay seem pretty decent fits as wing backs, it'll be interesting to see how Lampard configures his midfield.

Obviously Matt Grimes and Frank Onyeka will man the barricade in the middle, will Jack Rudoni join them in a three-man midfield in a 5-3-2 with Mason-Clark playing close to Taiwo Awoniyi.

Or will it be a 5-4-1 with Rudoni and Mason-Clark on the wings and a central striker. We'll know more soon.

That's for Iliman Ndiaye, a late signing from Everton. Enzo Fernandez starts on the bench.

Two changes and a back five for the Sky Blues

First trip to the Etihad, marked with a first outing for this beauty. Spot the hot coral.

Sometimes player announcements come a few hours after the transfer deadline.

On the odd occasion they slip into the following day.

However, the Sky Blues were keeping this one in their back pocket until the end of the week.

Yesterday afternoon they announced a late summer signing in French forward Yann Gboho from Toulouse.

The 25-year-old attacking midfielder, whose main position is on the left wing, joins the Sky Blues on a long term contract and for an undisclosed fee.

The deal was agreed before the transfer deadline but was subject to a delay while FIFA checked all the documents were in order. FIFA have now ratified the move.

The winger joins the Sky Blues on a permanent contract from Ligue 1 side Toulouse, subject to UK visa approval. Gnoho is still in France at present but is expected back in the next couple of days.
