Matt Renshaw’s maiden ODI century and Nathan Ellis’ five-wicket haul lead Australia to 59-run win over Zimbabwe

Australia secured a 59-run victory against Zimbabwe in the opening match of the three-game ODI series at Harare Sports Club on September 15, with Matt Renshaw scoring his maiden one-day international century and Nathan Ellis taking five wickets.

After being asked to bat first, Australia posted a total of 294 for eight in their 50 overs. Renshaw played a commanding innings of 109 runs, anchoring the batting lineup and accelerating towards the end of the innings. His century was Australia’s first ODI hundred against Zimbabwe since Michael Clarke’s unbeaten 105 in Harare in 2004. Additionally, it was the first ODI century by an Australian batting at number six or lower since Glenn Maxwell’s 201-run innings against Afghanistan during the 2023 ODI World Cup.

Cooper Connolly supported with a significant 51, while Alex Carey contributed to maintain Australia’s momentum throughout their innings.

For Zimbabwe, Newman Nyamhuri was the standout bowler, taking five wickets for 62 runs. Nyamhuri became only the second Zimbabwean bowler to achieve a five-wicket haul against Australia in men’s ODIs.

Chasing 295, Zimbabwe struggled to build key partnerships and were dismissed for 235 in 45.1 overs. Craig Ervine top-scored with 59, while captain Sikandar Raza added 57, both combining for a 98-run partnership. However, their efforts were insufficient to secure victory as Australia’s bowling attack maintained pressure.

Nathan Ellis was the leading bowler for Australia, delivering an impressive spell of five wickets for 31 runs. He claimed crucial wickets at vital moments, limiting Zimbabwe’s chase and ensuring a comfortable win for the visitors.

The win gave Australia a 1-0 lead in the three-match ODI series. The next two matches are scheduled to take place at Harare Sports Club on September 18 and September 20. Australia will aim to continue their winning form, while Zimbabwe will seek to level the series.
