Mayor’s Cup golf tournament raises money for Boys and Girls Clubs of South Alabama

MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) - The 35th annual Mayor’s Cup golf tournament, presented by Lexus of Mobile, was held Thursday morning at Magnolia Grove.
The event brought together community leaders, businesses, and supporters to benefit the Boys and Girls Clubs of South Alabama.
Mobile Mayor Spiro Cheriogotis said the club provides a safe place for kids after school.
“You know, if you’ve never visited a club, you should. You know, after school is a tough time for a lot of families. Parents are still working. Kids are out of school. What the Boys and Girls Club do, not only do they bring kids in, give them a snack, give them a safe place to be. They encourage them to pursue their dreams. They give them extracurricular activities to really expand their mind and expand their physical strength,” Cheriogotis said.
Money raised helps provide programs, opportunities, and resources for kids and teens across South Alabama.
Jermaine West, CEO of the Boys and Girls Club of South Alabama, said the tournament supports the organization’s daily work.
“Yes, it helps us support our kids, you know, in our clubs. You know, we are definitely trying day to day to give these kids opportunities that they don’t necessarily have. We hope that they come to our clubs, have a great time, they have fun. We want to also teach them things along the way. And this gives us those opportunities when they come out and support our events such as this golf tournament, our Youth of the Year. But these are the things that we need to help our kids continue to grow,” West said.
Golfers who took part in the tournament also learned more about the organization’s work in the area.
“It’s wonderful because the more people that understand the things that we do and how much the kids need our loving and our care and the things that we do in our clubs, it helps us continue the mission,” West said.
