History was made in the Ranji Trophy on Monday (October 19) during the plate group between Mizoram and Nagaland at the Nagaland Cricket Association Stadium in Dimapur, as Chinmay Sutar scored 400 runs in the first innings of the match. Playing for the visitors, he walked out to bat at number three in the eight over of the match after opener Sahil Reza was dismissed for four runs.

Sutar made an unbeaten knock of 400 in just 517 balls as Mizoram posted a massive total of 581 on the board before declaring their innings. The 29-year-old's knock included 46 boundaries as well as seven sixes.

Suthar has registered the second-highest individual score in the history of the Ranji Trophy after Bhausaheb Nimbalkar's 443 for Maharashtra against Katiawar in Pune. The Mizoram cricketer joins Nimbalkar as only the second Indian to score a 400 in first-class history and ended a 78-year wait for a player from the country to complete a quadruple in red-ball cricket as well as in India's premier first-class competition.

Highest individual scores in Ranji Trophy History

Sutar also set a world record as he registered the maiden century of his first-class century. The Mizoram cricketer came close to reaching the milestone last year but was run out for 99 in the opening match of the season against Manipur, which was also his debut in first-class cricket.

Sutar is the first player to convert his maiden first-class century into a 400 in history. The previous record for the most runs scored by a batter during his first-ever century in the longest format of the game was held by India's Sakibul Gani, who is the current captain of the Bihar cricket team.

Most Runs In Maiden First-Class Century

Overall, Sutar is only the 10th player in history to score over 400 after Brian Lara (501*, 400*), Hanif Mohammad (499), Don Bradman (452*), Bhausaheb Nimbalkar (443*), Bill Ponsford (437, 429), Aftab Baloch (428), Archie MacLaren (424), Sam Northeast (410*), and Graeme Hick (405*).
