Munster lock Edwin Edogbo down on new deal until 2029

Munster and Ireland lock Edwin Edogbo has signed a new deal that will keep him at the province until 2029.

The 23-year-old Cobh Pirates man became the first player from the club to enter the Munster academy when he earned a contract in 2021, and went on to make his first team debut a year later away to the Dragons and was a part of the team that won the URC in 2023.

After a near two-year injury layoff, Edogbo returned to the rugby pitch early last season and instantly made an impact for Clayton McMillan’s side.

A rare bright spark in what was a disappointing season, when he could stay fit, Edogbo was a real breath of fresh air for Irish rugby, an impressively physical player that doesn’t come around too often in Ireland. His brother, Sean, is also a highly regarded Munster academy player, making his senior debut last season.

His performances upon his return rightfully earned him a call-up into Andy Farrell’s Ireland squad for the 2026 Six Nations, and he would make his Test debut in the win over Italy at the Aviva Stadium in February. Before signing this new deal, several clubs around Europe were said to be keeping tabs on him.

All in all, he’s made 31 appearances for Munster, scoring seven tries, and the province’s General Manager Ian Costello added his delight at the new deal. ‘We are delighted that Edwin has made the decision to commit his future to Munster, despite significant interest from clubs across Europe.

‘He is part of an exciting group of emerging home-grown players that are pivotal to the future success of the club. Edwin possesses unique qualities and has the potential to excel at the highest level. We look forward to supporting his continued development and seeing him fulfil that potential in both a Munster and an Irish shirt.’

Head Coach Clayton McMillan added: ‘Edwin is a talented young player with a physical profile that is highly sought after in the modern game. He has the size, athleticism and work ethic to make a significant impact at the highest level.

‘We’re grateful that Edwin has chosen to commit his future to Munster. He has worked hard through some challenging setbacks and is an important part of what we are building here. We look forward to seeing him continue to develop and fulfil his potential in the years ahead.’
