NBA 2K27 Review Roundup: What Critics Are Saying

By Franz Christian Irorita,

NBA 2K27 is out now on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC, and reviews continue to roll in.

Metacritic’s Metascore now sits at 79 (Generally Favorable) on PS5, based on five critic reviews, while OpenCritic’s aggregate holds at 73 (Fair). Early reception overall is positive to mixed, with critics broadly agreeing the on-court gameplay, particularly defense, represents a real step forward, even as opinions diverge on how much that improvement outweighs the series’ familiar monetization concerns and off-court pacing issues.

GamersRD gave NBA 2K27 a 95, calling it “a very polished installment” that listens to its community, praising the new NBA 2K HQ companion app and a more refined MyCAREER narrative.

ComicBook landed on the opposite end at 60, arguing the game “doesn’t go far enough” to make its new ideas shine, pointing to long-running issues and ever-present microtransactions as the drag holding it back.

IGN’s review remains in progress, though its early assessment frames this year’s defensive rework as a dramatic leap, comparing 2K26’s defense to a benchwarmer against 2K27’s “Most Improved Player.”

Athlon Sports scored the game an 8 out of 10, calling it “an excellent basketball game living inside an occasionally exhausting NBA 2K product.” The outlet singled out the rebuilt hands-up defense, overhauled shot-contest logic, and expanded defensive cutoffs as the clearest gains, while noting MyTEAM’s now-familiar power creep and The City’s persistent mix of impressiveness and frustration kept the score from climbing higher.

The Outer Haven‘s review similarly praised the on-court feel, noting that once you’re actually playing, “NBA 2K27 feels fantastic,” even as it stopped short of a full numerical verdict pending further testing.

Beebom‘s review criticized the game’s presentation pacing, arguing it “cuts to advertisements far too often,” even while calling the overall basketball experience enjoyable thanks to improved defense and dribbling.

But Why Tho was more measured in its framing, writing that the on-court product “took a real leap” this year, crediting the defensive rework specifically for making stopping the ball feel as rewarding as scoring, while noting the off-court modes still need to match that same energy.

Cultura Geek scored the game an 80, praising the Eras mode as “the crown jewel” of this year’s release and calling it reason enough on its own to justify buying the game, despite the outlet flagging the same invasive microtransactions and pay-to-advance mechanics that have dogged past entries.

PlayStation Universe also landed on 80, highlighting the long-awaited addition of co-ed play in The City, though the review noted MyTeam still lacks the same depth of story and immersion for female players that male players get.

ESPN’s review, unscored, praised this year’s MyPlayer story, Fire & Concrete, and the significantly expanded character creation for WNBA MyPlayers, which now shares the same customization engine used for men. The outlet also highlighted the new historical Eras feature, letting players start games set during past periods like the Jordan or Kobe eras, complete with period-appropriate rosters and broadcast graphics.

GamingTrend struck a more critical tone, writing that the game “feels like two steps forward and one massive step back,” praising the improved defense and collision systems while arguing that movement lost fluidity compared to last year and that MyCareer leans too heavily on returning character Trace Miller.

Our own review awarded NBA 2K27 a 9.5 out of 10, calling it the best the series has felt in years and a clear step up from both 2K25 and 2K26. The review highlighted reworked defense as the change that matters most, along with The City’s first co-ed integration and this year’s MyCAREER story, Fire & Concrete, as one of the strongest the franchise has told recently.

The review wasn’t without reservations. A permanent fictional co-op teammate, Trace Miller, was flagged as a real immersion problem for players uninterested in co-op, and MyTEAM’s monetization pacing was described as an open question worth monitoring through the season. The review also noted the PC version still lacks keybind remapping, and Nintendo Switch 2 performance couldn’t be verified ahead of launch since a review code wasn’t made available for that platform.

Despite those flaws, our review concluded the overall package is strong enough to recommend to both lapsed fans and longtime players.
