NBA News: Mark Williams Undergoes Shoulder Surgery, Suns Center Expected to Miss Several Months

The Phoenix Suns are expected to be without starting center Mark Williams for several months after he underwent surgery Thursday to repair a torn labrum in his left shoulder. According to John Gambadoro of Arizona Sports 98.7, Williams could miss around five months, which would put his potential return sometime in February if his recovery stays on schedule. The injury occurred during an offseason workout.

The setback comes shortly after the 24-year-old secured a three-year, $38 million contract with Phoenix this summer after finally showing he could stay on the court for more than 50 games in a season. Williams has dealt with several injury issues throughout his young career, including problems involving his foot, ankle, thumb and back, making this another frustrating blow as he prepares for the new NBA season.

Phoenix Suns center Mark Williams is facing an extended spell on the sidelines after undergoing surgery Thursday to repair a torn labrum in his left shoulder. The team confirmed that the procedure was successful, with the injury occurring during an offseason workout. The Suns have not yet provided a specific recovery timeline, saying a return date will be determined at a later stage. The Suns’ statement said Williams “underwent successful surgery on Thursday to repair a torn labrum in his left shoulder. The injury occurred during an offseason workout. A timetable for his return to play will be established at a later date.”

The setback comes just after Williams agreed to a fully guaranteed three-year, $38 million contract to remain with Phoenix. The 24-year-old was coming off the healthiest season of his four-year NBA career, playing 60 games after previously never appearing in more than 44 in a season. He averaged 11.7 points, 8.0 rebounds and 0.9 blocks in 23.6 minutes per game.

Williams joined the Suns in a 2025 draft-night trade with the Charlotte Hornets and quickly established himself as Phoenix’s starting center. His presence helped the team outperform preseason expectations and secure a playoff spot. Across his career, Williams has averaged 12 points, 8.5 rebounds and one block per game, making his absence a significant blow for the Suns.

With Williams unavailable, Phoenix is expected to give Oso Ighodaro and Khaman Maluach bigger roles in the frontcourt. Ighodaro played all 82 games last season and provided reliable minutes, while Maluach showed encouraging signs during Summer League after a relatively quiet rookie campaign. Neither player was originally expected to carry the primary workload at center.

Williams was brought back to provide size, rebounding and stability in the middle, but the Suns will now have to find alternative solutions while he recovers. Phoenix could spend much of the opening portion of the season adjusting its center rotation before hoping Williams can return healthy and finally put together a sustained stretch on the court.
