Netflix promised its football subscribers that the platform had learned from its live-streaming disaster after Mike Tyson versus Jake Paul's boxing match in 2024, but NFL fans weren't convinced after running into the same issues while watching Thursday night's stream live from Melbourne.
The 49ers-Rams stream turned into a glitchy remix of every fan’s worst tech nightmare. Frame drops, buffering, audio lag, and visuals that looked more like VHS had viewers wondering whether Netflix was delivering its proper 1080p quality, let alone 4K.
The complaints piled up as Netflix carried one of the NFL's biggest international showcases from the Melbourne Cricket Ground. Even paying customers of the highest ad-free tiers also raged over the number of commercials during the broadcast.
Several viewers said they were subscribed to Netflix's ad-free or Premium plans, costing up to $24.999 per month, only to find themselves still sitting through NFL ad breaks.
All of that frustration runs directly counter to the message Netflix Vice President of Nonfiction Series and Sports Brandon Riegg delivered after the Jake Paul-Mike Tyson boxing stream that crashed in 2024.
"The sheer tonnage of people that came to watch was incredible," Riegg said while explaining that the company needed an event of that magnitude to stress-test its system.
Riegg promised that Netflix engineers worked extensively on the platform afterward to handle the expected demand from NFL games and that live sports are a "necessary risk" in building the platform's sports portfolio.
Two years later, 49ers-Rams became the latest uncomfortable test of that promise. Viewers complained that the presentation looked soft, stuttered, and even skipped frames during the action.
One fan wrote, "NFL on Netflix is so bad. NFL anywhere other than America is worse. What an awful broadcast." Another added: So the video quality is actually dog---- potato, Nokia brick-phone quality, and it isn't my connection, got it. Holy ---- Netflix, figure it out."
Others reported that the audio was out of sync with the picture during the game around the first quarter, long after jokes about Elle Duncan's infamous leather gloves at the broadcast table had subsided.
San Francisco at least delivered a decisive upset result through the streaming complaints. The 49ers beat the Rams 27-7 after leading 10-7 at halftime and shutting Los Angeles out across the final two quarters.
49ers quarterback Brock Purdy finished 25-of-34 for 205 yards, three touchdowns and one interception. San Francisco also rushed for 174 yards, with Christian McCaffrey producing 68 on 10 carries and Kaelon Black adding 65 on 14.
