Next-gen rising: Jahnie van Zyl and Connor Doig lead South Africa’s tennis revival

South Africa’s next generation of tennis talent continues to command attention on the world stage, anchored by remarkable performances from two of the nation’s brightest young prospects: Jahnie van Zyl and Connor Doig.

Van Zyl recently achieved a career-defining breakthrough, capturing her maiden professional women’s singles title at the ITF World Tennis Tour W15 Cap d’Agde in France.

The 17-year-old from Potchefstroom displayed composure beyond her years on the French clay during the final against the Czech Republic’s Michaela Bayerlová. After falling behind 3-5 in the opening set, Van Zyl mounted a staggering turnaround, winning 10 consecutive games to seal the first set 7-5 before powering through a flawless 6-0 second set to claim the trophy.

Van Zyl’s week in Cap d'Agde was a masterclass in resilience, racking up five victories over the tournament. She eased past the Ivory Coast's Emira Diabate (6-1, 6-3), France’s Hajar Crinebouch (6-3, 6-0), and Spain’s Marta Soriano Santiago (6-2, 6-3) in straight sets. Her sternest challenge came in the semi-finals against Belgium’s Romane Longueville, where she dug deep to pull off a 6-3, 4-6, 6-1 victory.

The triumph adds another crown to an incredible 2026 campaign for Van Zyl, who also clinched both the singles and doubles titles on clay at the African Junior Championships in Cairo earlier this year. Her seamless transition from top-tier junior play to capturing her first professional title signals a promising future for South African women’s tennis.

Simultaneously, 18-year-old Doig, from Durban, continues to fly the South African flag high on the junior Grand Slam circuit. Doig kicked off 2026 in historic fashion by winning the Australian Open Boys' Doubles title alongside Bulgaria’s Dimitar Kisimov, becoming the first South African to lift a junior doubles crown in Melbourne.

His overseas campaign has maintained impressive momentum across all four major surfaces. Following third-round appearances in the boys' singles at both Roland Garros and Wimbledon earlier in the season, Doig produced another strong showing at the US Open Junior Championships in New York, advancing to the round of 16 before falling 6-3, 6-3 to second seed Jamie Mackenzie.

South Africa’s representation on tennis’ biggest stage has long been starved of depth, with injury-plagued top seed Lloyd Harris often ploughing a lone furrow on the global tour. Harris once again flew the flag single-handedly in the main draw at Flushing Meadows, grinding his way to the second round of the US Open.

Together, Van Zyl and Doig represent a sensational new wave of South African talent, proving that the country’s next generation is well-equipped to compete – and win – against the world's best.
