NFL sends blunt message to Mike Vrabel with hefty fine over officials incident

New England Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel has reportedly been fined $250,000 by the NFL for his conduct towards officials, with two other head coaches receiving the same punishment.

According to Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer, Philadelphia Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni and New York Jets head coach Aaron Glenn have also been hit with the hefty penalties.

The fines follow growing scrutiny of interactions between coaches and officials, with the league seemingly determined to make its expectations clear.

Breer described the punishments as a clear statement from the NFL but suggested there could be a way for the three coaches to avoid paying.

He wrote: “That, of course, is a pretty stiff penalty and a clear statement. I’ve also heard that the fines are in abeyance, meaning they’d be on hold, and could be repealed with good behavior.”

Vrabel’s fine stems from a confrontation with an official during Week 4. The Patriots coach addressed the incident after the game and insisted his comments were not derogatory.

“I told him it was a terrible — I’m not going to say effing — call. I’ve said that 87 times since I’ve been a head coach. It was nothing derogatory. You’d have to ask him,” Vrabel said.

“I think he was a little sensitive.”

The size of the reported fine has raised eyebrows, particularly because the NFL has not publicly detailed the specific behaviour that prompted the punishment.

Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio described the penalties as “borderline cartoonish”, arguing that the league had not clearly explained what the coaches had done to warrant such significant fines.

MORE NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS STORIES

There is also uncertainty surrounding what the NFL would consider good behaviour and whether the three coaches can successfully appeal.

For New England, the figure is particularly striking given that the franchise received a $250,000 fine during the Spygate scandal, alongside the forfeiture of a first-round draft pick.

Vrabel must now turn his attention to the Patriots’ next challenge, with the team preparing to visit the Chicago Bears on Thursday Night Football.

The reported punishment also sends a warning to other head coaches, although clearer guidance from the NFL may be needed if the league expects them to avoid similar sanctions.
