Nintendo Switch 2 Gets a Winning Sports Comeback With 'Nintendo Switch Sports Resort'

Nintendo is bringing its motion-controlled sports franchise to a new generation with "Nintendo Switch Sports Resort," a game launching exclusively for Nintendo Switch 2 on October 22, 2026. The upcoming release introduces 12 sports and leisure activities, an explorable island setting, and additional single-player content while retaining the accessible controls that defined the "Wii Sports" series.

The game arrives nearly two decades after "Wii Sports" introduced motion-controlled bowling, tennis, and other activities to a wide audience. With "Nintendo Switch Sports Resort," Nintendo is expanding the formula with new events, Joy-Con 2 features, character customization, and online competition.

According to Nintendo's official announcement, preorders are available through the Nintendo eShop. The game takes place at Wuhu Island, a familiar location from "Wii Sports Resort," where players can participate in sports and discover activities beyond traditional matches.

The official "Nintendo Switch Sports Resort" release date is October 22, 2026. Nintendo has confirmed that the game is exclusive to Nintendo Switch 2, with no version announced for the original Nintendo Switch.

The game supports television and tabletop play, with one to four players on a single system. Online play supports different player counts depending on the mode. A Nintendo Account, an internet connection, and a paid Nintendo Switch Online membership are required for online features.

Nintendo's official product listing also identifies Mii character support and high dynamic range (HDR) output on compatible televisions. The estimated digital download size is approximately 16 GB on the US store listing, although final requirements may vary by version or region.

"Nintendo Switch Sports Resort" features 12 sports and leisure activities, with a lineup that combines familiar events and new additions. Returning sports include tennis, bowling, golf, basketball, boxing, archery, and volleyball. The new activities include skateboarding, thumb wrestling, Power Cruising, and Prop Plane.

Each activity uses motion controls in a different way. Players swing the Joy-Con 2 to perform actions such as hitting a tennis ball, shooting an arrow, or rolling a bowling ball. The controls are designed to make the activities accessible without requiring complex button combinations.

Skateboarding introduces a different control approach through Joy-Con 2 mouse functionality. Power Cruising brings water-based movement to the resort, while Prop Plane lets players fly around the island. These activities expand the game beyond head-to-head sporting events.

Nintendo outlined the new and returning activities in its official feature guide ahead of launch, giving players an overview of the sports available on release day.

Wuhu Island returns as the central setting for "Nintendo Switch Sports Resort." In addition to its sports facilities, the island contains sightseeing locations and optional discoveries that players can find while exploring.

Players can search for hidden hibiscus flowers, follow dolphins in the ocean, and collect Spocco Photos that highlight locations around the resort. The exploration features provide additional objectives between matches and connect the new game to the setting established in "Wii Sports Resort."

Leisure activities such as skateboarding and Prop Plane also let players move through the island in different ways. Rather than limiting the environment to a menu for selecting sports, the game incorporates exploration into its wider structure.

The new Island Crown mode gives solo players a progression system separate from multiplayer competition. Players can rise through the ranks in individual sports and challenge Island Champions and Island Legends.

The mode provides structured goals for players who want to improve their performance without joining an online match or arranging a local multiplayer session. It also gives the game a clearer single-player progression path than a collection of short sports matches alone.

Nintendo has also introduced Spocco Points, which players earn by participating in sports across different modes. These points can be exchanged at the Item Center for customization items for Mii characters and Sportsmates. The system connects regular play with character personalization, allowing players to unlock additional appearances and accessories.

Local multiplayer supports up to four players on one Nintendo Switch 2 system, depending on the activity and controller setup. The format allows friends and family to compete in short matches without needing separate consoles.

Online modes expand the player count and introduce different ways to compete. Nintendo lists Friend Lobbies for private matches, casual online play, and a ranked Pro League. Friend Lobbies can accommodate multiple players, with the supported number depending on the selected mode.

A Nintendo Switch Online membership is required for online play. Nintendo also notes that some online services may not be available in every region, so players should check the service's availability before purchasing the game for its online features.

The combination of local and online modes means that the sports can be played in different settings, from a shared living room to competitive matches with players elsewhere.

Reviews published ahead of the October 22 release have examined the game's expanded lineup, motion controls, exploration features, and single-player progression.

In its October 20 review, The Verge discussed the game's expanded version of Nintendo's sports formula, including the 12 activities and the way island exploration adds another layer beyond conventional matches. The review also examined the appeal of skateboarding and its motion-based controls.

Other gaming publications have examined the addition of Island Crown and the variety of sports. Their coverage has focused on how the new single-player objectives broaden the experience while multiplayer remains central to the game's design.

The coverage places particular attention on how Nintendo has expanded the series beyond short competitive activities. The final release allows players to access the full lineup and explore the different modes on Nintendo Switch 2.

With its October 22, 2026 release date, "Nintendo Switch Sports Resort" brings 12 motion-controlled activities to Nintendo Switch 2 alongside Wuhu Island exploration, Island Crown progression, and local and online multiplayer. Its combination of familiar sports and new leisure activities continues the format associated with "Wii Sports" and "Wii Sports Resort."

The game is available exclusively for Nintendo Switch 2, with digital preorders offered through the Nintendo eShop. Online features require a Nintendo Account, an internet connection, and a paid Nintendo Switch Online membership. Players can check Nintendo's official product page for current availability, edition details, and regional requirements.
