Novak Djokovic will head to the French capital knowing he needs a miracle to qualify for the ATP Finals.

Having opted to skip this prestigious end-of-year showcase in the last two seasons, this year, the 39-year-old has opted to push for participation.

However, despite winning the China Open title, a string of shock early exits has put him in an uncomfortable position as the deadline draws closer.

His defeat in Basel was particularly disappointing and has left him needing to reach at least the semi-finals of the Paris Masters just to give himself a chance of playing in the ATP Finals.

Fortunately, history is on Novak Djokovic’s side.

The Serbian made his debut at the Paris Masters in 2005, the year when he truly began to establish himself as a presence on the ATP Tour.

A run to the third round represented a fantastic return, and he would follow that up with back-to-back second-round runs before matching his best performance in 2008.

However, 2009 represented the real breakthrough, as he carved through the draw to beat Gael Monfils in the final. Having lost four Masters 1000 finals throughout that season before the Paris Masters triumph, this felt much deserved.

Djokovic would not win another until 2013, but then enjoyed a period of dominance, claiming three in a row before Marin Cilic finally thwarted his winning run in 2016.

2018 was the first time that the 39-year-old had ever lost in the Paris Masters final, beaten by Karen Khachanov. He would get his revenge the following year, regaining the title by beating Denis Shapovalov.

Djokovic won it again in 2021, lost in the final in 2022, and won his seventh and final Paris Masters title in 2023.

He is the greatest champion in the tournament’s history, and 2026 will represent his first appearance since that win three years ago.

Currently, he boasts a 50-9 winning record in the French capital. His 85% win rate represents his best at any Masters 1000 tournament aside from the Miami Open.

Djokovic’s Paris Masters draw for this upcoming tournament has not been kind, with his ATP Finals qualification hopes having been dealt a huge blow.
