Ogayre unable to reach Asiad boxing podium after loss to Uzbek

THE Philippines' first shot at a boxing podium finish at the 20th Asian Games ended in heartbreak as Junmilardo Ogayre was outclassed by Abdumalik Khalokov of Uzbekistan in the quarterfinals at the Nishio gymnasium on Sunday.
Khalokov, the reigning Olympic, Asiad, and world champion, fought with experience and precision in breaking down Ogayre in the men's 60kg class. He won via unanimous decision, 5-0, winning all the judges scorecards by count of 30-26.
A win by Ogayre would have assured the national boxing team of its first medal - a bronze - in the quadrennial showcase.
Now everything is down to the Olympic duo of Nesthy Petecio and Carlo Paalam, who both see action in Monday's quarterfinals against a pair of Chinese opponents.
Petecio, a two-time Olympic medalists including a silver in the 2020 Tokyo Games, will clash against Chengyu Yang, a gold medal winner in the 2023 World Championships, in the women's 60kg class.
Paalam, also a silver medal winner in Tokyo, is up against Jiamao Zhang, a gold medalist in the 2026 World Cup last April, in the men's 55kg. division.
A win by both lands them a podium finish in the boxing competitions.
Ogayre tried his best against the 26-year-old Khalokov, an inactive pro fighter, but obviously still hasn't reach yet the same level as the bemedalled Kazakhs fighter.
The Filipino suffered a cut on his eyebrow in the second round following an accidental headclash, but Khalokov already had the fight in control by that time.
Ogayre followed Olympic medal winner Aira Villegas, Rissa Pasuit, and Norlan Petecio on the sidelines.
