The old 'crazy golf' area at Coventry's War Memorial Park is set to become a padel court.

CoventryLive revealed the initial plans for the now redundant area last year.

Now an official application has been submitted to the city council for four courts at the old facility, close to the tennis courts.

The application said: "Memorial Park is a vital local asset that currently provides a range of outdoor sports and recreation opportunities including eight tennis courts, skatepark, playground, parkrun and Coventry Godiva FC.

"The introduction of four padel courts will modernise and diversify the site’s offer, supporting increased participation, year-round activity, and the continued development of Memorial Park as a premier community sports hub.

"The proposed courts are located entirely on an existing area of a redundant crazy golf course situated adjacent to the tennis courts. This area is currently confined by a perimeter hedge and has no functional value as a playing surface.

"The development remains within the established hedge confined footprint, ensuring zero disruption to active tennis courts and maintaining the open, recreational character of the grounds.

"Each court will be fitted with four LED floodlighting columns with a final height of six metres. This height has been selected to balance high-quality illumination with visual sensitivity, ensuring the facility operates safely throughout the year while remaining unobtrusive to the surrounding woodland landscape."

The courts would be accessed via the main existing pedestrian route. The proposal said the Visitor Centre and Bistro Cafe provided on-site facilities, including toilets, changing areas and indoor space for players and spectators.

"These facilities will continue to serve all users of the site, including those participating in padel activities.

"The proximity of the courts to the facilities ensures players do not need to travel long distances between the courts and the buildings."

Planning officers are considering the application as it falls within a Conservation Area. Full details of the proposals can be found on the council's website by searching in the planning applications section for reference PL/2026/0000972/FUL.
