On This Day: Zanardi grabs Laguna Sena win with last-lap pass in Corkscrew | Brief

On this day in 1996 Alex Zanardi performed an astonishing last-lap pass on Bryan Herta at Laguna Seca’s corkscrew to win the CART IndyCar season finale. His team mate Jimmy Vasser clinched the championship.

Zanardi, who passed away earlier this year, went on to win the CART title in the following two seasons, before returning to Formula 1 with Williams. Laguna Seca has renamed the corner the ‘Zanardi Corkscrew’ in honour of him.
