Pat McAfee Is Being A Cry Baby About The Utah Gameday Situation

Pat McAfee was a former punter in the NFL for the Indianapolis Colts. He was beloved as a player for bringing excitement and flair to the punter position. Now, he has used that to make a name for himself as a sports analyst, becoming one of the top two dogs at ESPN. He is currently making around $30 million dollars per year from ESPN and is one of the faces of the company.
One of his main jobs outside of The Pat McAfee Show is being an analyst on College Gameday. College Gameday is a live college football pregame show that takes place every Saturday morning and gets the country excited for the slate of games that day. Last week, Gameday went to Salt Lake City ahead of the Utah vs. Houston matchup. Unfortunately, it does not seem like Pat McAfee had a good time at the University of Utah, and now he is being a bit of a baby about the whole situation.
McAfee is a bit of a controversial person; as he stated in the video, there are a lot of people who seem to dislike him. He can be very entertaining when it comes to his analysis of college football and sports in general. He is known for not holding back and being 100 percent himself. Also, he offers a lot of comedy and humor in how he chooses to discuss sports. I think that style is awesome and is a big reason he became so popular in the first place. However, it seems like he is struggling to take a joke, which comes off as a bit hypocritical.
Now, I can understand his point of view, with his issue stemming from the fact that the University itself posted that video. However, I just do not think it is that serious. You are supposed to be the “funny sports guy,” yet you can not take a couple of college students poking fun at you, saying you are cringe. I do not think the University itself posting a video of its students with lighthearted impressions of McAfee is a declaration of war. Also, he is right; he is essentially cutting an infomercial or doing a light version of PR for the University of Utah while hosting Gameday. However, Utah is not paying you. ESPN is paying you $30 million to do your job at the university they chose for College Gameday.
The reaction to the impression video aside. I think he is overreacting to the woman picked to kick the field goal, a new College Gameday tradition, and the request for 3 million dollars. I’ll start off by saying I like the newer field goal tradition, and I respect that he has put up his own money to fund the prizes. I am all for the excitement those kicks bring to the show and appreciate him changing the lives of college students.
However, the student made a lighthearted joke about the prize not being $3 million for the kick. The reason for the comment was that College Gameday just went to BYU the literal week before, and that was the prize on that Saturday. Now, some context: Utah and BYU are huge rivals, so to me that was a small joke about the BYU/Utah rivalry and the difference in prize money. Ultimately, it seemed like such small joke she tried to make to be funny on camera in front of millions of people.
Once again, not the end of the world, but it seems like Pat McAfee struggled to take a joke. Also, I did not like how, when addressing the situation on the Pat McAfee Show, he took the time to dunk on her for that small joke on the show. It just seemed a bit excessive to me.
Lastly, the only issue I have with the situation and how McAfee seems to be dragging the situation out is his assassination comment. Pat McAfee alluded to hosting College Gameday and the University posting the impressions video to the Charlie Kirk assassination.
“Has anything really scary happened at, like, a college gathering in the state of Utah recently?…Do you think we should be amplifying reasons for why people hate my guts as a university?” (-Pat McAfee)
I mean that just seems like such a far reach to say the University posting a video of Utah students making fun of McAfee is an invitation or light encouragement for people to shoot him. I mean, that is the only way to take that comment; he is obviously alluding to the Kirk assassination that took place at Utah Valley University. Now, I am not a huge celebrity/public figure, so maybe I do not understand the nuances and danger that come with public gatherings. But the Kirk assassination and College Gameday have nothing to do with each other, and implying the University posting a video opens the door to that horrific outcome seems silly to me.
Now, it was still a fun College Gameday episode all things considered. It is unfortunate that McAfee felt uncomfortable during the live show, and I would hope he does not get that feeling doing future shows. Also, it seems clear he does not like Utah and has no interest in doing Gameday there again based on his comments on his Pat McAfee show. I’m sure he will continue to be successful, and College Gameday will continue to be a hit.
Ultimately, I think he is being a bit of a baby about the whole situation, and can’t take a joke as well as he gives them out on the daily. Nevertheless, the next College Gameday will be in Bloomington, Indiana, as the Hoosiers take on Minnesota. Hopefully, this show goes on without any problems, and I’d be interested to see if he throws any shade at Utah on that Saturday’s live show.
