Patrick Mahomes’ father makes emotional court request as Chiefs star closes in on comeback after devastating injury

Pat Mahomes Sr. is hoping to be in the stands when his son takes the field for the Kansas City Chiefs this season. The former MLB pitcher has asked a Texas court for permission to travel to several states during his ongoing probation. His request comes as Patrick Mahomes prepares for a crucial return after a serious knee injury ended his 2025 campaign earlier than expected.

According to a report by KTRE 9’s Nic Huber, Mahomes Sr. filed a motion in the 7th District Court in Tyler seeking approval to travel for seven NFL games during the 2026 season. His proposed destinations include Kansas City, Missouri, Las Vegas, Nevada, and Cincinnati, Ohio. The request is tied to his five-year probation sentence, which began after a 2024 DWI conviction. Because he remains under supervision, traveling outside Texas requires court approval and comes with specific conditions.Mahomes Sr. has already received permission for out-of-state travel this year. In June, he was allowed to visit Missouri to support his granddaughter Sterling, Patrick Mahomes’ five-year-old daughter, during her first dance recital. The conditions attached to that trip included reporting to his probation officer before leaving and completing a urinalysis test.

Similar requirements could apply to his latest request. The filing states that Mahomes Sr. understands he may have to undergo testing before and after his trips whenever his supervision officer requests it.His court filing also points to steps he has taken during probation. He has completed 160 hours of community service and attended a 16-week outpatient treatment program at Cenikor. The legal scrutiny surrounding Mahomes Sr. dates back several years. He pleaded guilty to a DWI charge in 2018 and served 40 days in county jail. His 2024 arrest came shortly before Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs secured another Super Bowl victory.A later incident also complicated his probation. His ankle monitor reportedly recorded a TAC level of 0.045% on January 1, leading to another arrest. However, a hair follicle test reportedly came back clean, and the court declined to revoke his probation. His supervision period was subsequently extended from five years to seven.

Mahomes Sr.’s request comes at an important moment for Patrick Mahomes. The Chiefs quarterback is working his way back from the ACL and LCL injuries he suffered against the Los Angeles Chargers on December 14, 2025.His rehabilitation has involved more than simply getting back on the field. Kansas City has managed his workload carefully throughout the offseason, while head coach Andy Reid kept him out of preseason action. One particularly personal detail from Mahomes’ recovery emerged recently. According to Kansas City Star reporter Sam McDowell, Mahomes had a simple goal after returning to Kansas City:“After he returned to Kansas City later in the week, he shared with some of those closest to him a more immediate goal for his recovery,” The Kansas City Star’s Sam McDowell wrote in a Mahomes recovery feature on September 4. “He wanted to walk before his baby daughter, 11-month-old Golden.”

Now, the focus is shifting toward Week 1. NFL Network's Tom Pelissero indicated that Mahomes has a chance to play against the Denver Broncos, although Reid has yet to officially confirm his status.“At this point Andy Reid has not even confirmed that Patrick Mahomes is starting in week one,” Pellisero said to Rich Eisen. “I would say all signs are pointing toward Patrick Mahomes being out there.”If the court grants Mahomes Sr.’s request, he could have the opportunity to watch his son begin another NFL season in person. For a father who has closely followed Patrick’s career, those seven games would mean far more than simply traveling to watch football.
