Paul Stirling’s cricket career and his brother Richard’s Under‑19 stint

Irish cricketer Paul Stirling, a mainstay of the national side since 2008, has an older brother Richard who played for Ireland’s Under‑19 team but never reached senior level.
Paul Robert Stirling was born on 3 September 1990 in Belfast and made his One‑Day International debut for Ireland as a 17‑year‑old in 2008.
He is noted for an aggressive batting style and has featured in Ireland’s first Test match in May 2018, later serving as vice‑captain in 2020 and being appointed permanent limited‑overs captain in 2023.
Stirling’s domestic career includes a ten‑year spell with Middlesex, appearances for the Northern Knights, and participation in several T20 franchise leagues such as the Bangladesh Premier League, Afghanistan Premier League, Pakistan Super League, The Hundred and the Caribbean Premier League.
He became the first Irish player to reach 4,000, 5,000 and ultimately 10,000 international runs across formats, and has scored centuries in Tests, ODIs and T20Is.
In 2022 he was named Ireland’s Men’s International Player of the Year and later received a Player of the Decade accolade for his consistent performances.
His older brother, Richard Brian Stirling, also pursued cricket, representing Ireland at Under‑19 level and being part of the squad for the 2006 ICC Under‑19 World Cup.
Richard did not progress to senior international cricket, illustrating different career trajectories within the same sporting family.
The Stirling family’s sporting pedigree extends beyond cricket; their father, Brian Stirling, played for Irish Schools and Ulster Town and later served as an international rugby union referee.
