PGA Tour Caddie Drops Bag On The Fairway & Quits Mid-Round In Wild Scene On The Course [VIDEO]

A PGA Tour caddie does not usually fire himself on camera. Cliff Ellis did it Thursday at the Biltmore Championship Asheville, halfway through Alejandro Tosti’s opening round. They started on the 10th tee at The Cliffs at Walnut Cove. Eight pars later, the bag hit the fairway on 18.

Ellis had looped for the 30-year-old Argentine on and off for years. A practice-round argument Tuesday already sat between them. On Thursday it spilled onto the green. Golf Channel caught them going back and forth as they walked in. Then Ellis set the bag down, pulled off the bib, and left.

Tosti thought he had gone to the bathroom. He walked to the next tee without a looper. Golf Channel said he pulled a fan from the gallery to finish the nine. He still signed for a 1-over 72.

The joke came first. Texted by Tosti to Golfweek’s Adam Schupak:

“He couldn’t keep up with eight pars in a row,” plus laughing emojis.

He later hired Patrick Talledo for Friday. Through seven holes of round two, he was still 1-over and staring at the cut.

Tosti arrived No. 186 in the FedEx Cup Fall standings, grouped with Luke Clanton and Spencer Oxendine at 8:59 a.m. off 10. He has a reputation for running hot. He was suspended on the Korn Ferry Tour in 2023 for conduct unbecoming and once had a looper wear “Need a wife” on the bib at Valspar. Tosti has admitted that dealing with himself is the fight of his career.

Loopers usually disappear for family emergencies, not mid-hole grudges. Scottie Scheffler’s man once left Memphis before a final round and still got a chaplain on the bag. The same job can pay like a Tour card when the player is Scheffler, which is why Ted Scott’s cut keeps going viral. Jon Rahm’s looper even listed a $14 million house. Ellis did not get a payday clip. He got a walk-off.

Neither man has given a full public explanation. A source on site told Golfweek the Tuesday practice round was already sour. Tosti still sounded stunned when the bib came off. He finished the hole. He finished the round. The video did the rest.
