Premier League explains Leeds United penalty denial against Newcastle United after VAR check

Leeds United’s early penalty appeals against Newcastle United were rejected for unintentional handball. Daniel Farke’s side went on to win 4-1.
Inside the first two minutes at Elland Road, a corner was only half cleared, the ball popping up to hit Matias Fernandez-Pardo’s arm just inside the box. With the defender’s arm raised near his shoulder, Michael Salisbury waved play on amid loud appeals. The Premier League said in a post that VAR had checked and upheld the on-field call.
Ao Tanaka’s effort deflected twice and, on 32 minutes, was credited as a Lewis Miley own goal. Leeds added two more before the interval, the second on 34 minutes after Dominic Calvert-Lewin headed a James Justin cross against Jayden Bogle. Calvert-Lewin then created and finished another in first-half added time to make it 3-0.
Noah Okafor half-volleyed a fourth around the hour. Newcastle substitute Bazoumana Toure struck in added time for 4-1.
Salisbury told VAR official John Brooks the ball had bounced and the contact was not deliberate, and the check confirmed play on. The 34th-minute strike was later credited to Jayden Bogle.
Victory by three goals lifted Leeds to third in the Premier League, and they remain unbeaten after four games with eight points. They target 11 on Sunday when Crystal Palace visit. Palace have lost three of their first four league matches and face Lech Poznan in the Europa League on Thursday night.
