Following a closely fought 30-24 home win against Newcastle Women’s 1s last season, the University of Nottingham’s Women’s Rugby Union 1s will be looking for a repeat performance on their opening game of the season with a chance to capitalise on home advantage and set their season off to a flyer.

The Green and Gold will be feeling optimistic, off the back of arguably their best season ever last year and a convincing win in 26-7 preseason against local rivals Nottingham Trent.

A string of phenomenal performances last season saw the team win the Premier North league title, before losing out on a place in BUCS Super Rugby in the Playoffs to a strong Surrey side.

Standout results included beating Wednesday’s opposition 24-17 away from home in Newcastle, starring Lily Woodhams who excelled with two tries to her name. That result followed a convincing 7-36 win over Durham, with winger Woodhams again scoring twice.

After such an impressive season last year, UoN have the squad capable of going one better this time around.

Hooker Jas Murray, who co-captained with new skipper Joely Hartwell in the previous iteration of this fixture and is now Vice President Sport for the Student Union, was announced as part of Leicester Tigers Women U23s Squad on 30th September alongside Woodhams, Lucy Baverstock, Poppy Murray, Seren Morris and Zara Parker.

In a pre-match interview Tim Westwood picked out new players Immy Collier and Niamh Fulton, who have already secured a spot in the Tigers U23s squad, as players to watch, and the new duo are expected to be exciting prospects for the Green and Gold.

This side will be hoping to continue last season’s form as they begin their campaign and look to deliver a statement win on opening night.
