Red Bull sign legend’s 11-year-old son as potential Verstappen replacement

The legacy of 2007 Formula 1 world champion Kimi Räikkönen is officially taking its next step as his 11-year-old son, Robin Raikkonen, has been signed to the elite Red Bull junior academy.
Known as Ace, Räikkönen’s addition marks a historic milestone for the program, as he becomes the youngest driver ever recruited by the championship team to map out a progression to the top of the sport.

Red Bull is expected to put its full weight behind the young Räikkönen, hoping to nurture him into a generational talent much like Max Verstappen, while echoing the natural speed of his world champion father.
There are multiple father-son duos in F1, with most of the children proving even more successful than their fathers, including Verstappen and 2016 world champion Nico Rosberg.
“We are all thrilled and excited that Robin has been chosen to further his racing path as a member of the Red Bull junior team,” said father, Kimi Räikkönen.
“Laurent [Mekies] and everyone else at Red Bull have been incredibly supportive throughout all our discussions.
“Red Bull’s junior team has had years of incredible success. Its alumni include Sebastian Vettel and Verstappen amongst many others.”
When Räikkönen officially joins the ranks next year, the famous Red Bull development pipeline will be under new leadership.
Gwen Lagrue, who previously spearheaded Mercedes′ youth efforts and guided the rise of Kimi Antonelli, is stepping in to replace controversial figure Helmut Marko as the head of the program.
“His speed, racecraft and natural talent have established him as one of the most promising young drivers in his age group,” said Red Bull team principal Laurent Mekies.
“At the same time, he impresses with his maturity, his calm approach and his clear focus on driving.
“Our goal is to develop him step by step, without placing any unnecessary pressure on his shoulders.
“The path through motorsport is a long one, and we will give him the time, support and resources he needs to maximise his potential.”
Despite the high expectations that come with his last name, Red Bull plans to take a measured approach to the 11-year-old’s career.
“We strongly believe that talent can thrive when supported by the right people, the right culture and the right environment,” Mekies continued.
“That is what we are committed to providing Robin as he continues his development.”
While 2007 champion Räikkönen never raced for Red Bull during his time in F1, his career is deeply intertwined with the brand.
He notably partnered with one of Red Bull’s most famous products, four-time world champion Vettel, during their time together at Ferrari.
More than two decades after the Finn’s F1 debut, the organisation is now banking on Räikkönen’s son to be their next future star.
