“Ridiculous Outfit,” “WHAT IS THAT” – Tennis World Reacts To Taylor Townsend’s Walk-On Outfit At US Open Before Sabalenka 4R

By Shantanu Bhattacharjee,
Taylor Townsend’s walk-on outfit during her fourth-round clash with Aryna Sabalenka at the US Open has drawn backlash from the tennis community. Some fans have interpreted her bold all-black outfit as a deliberate attempt to turn Arthur Ashe Stadium into a fashion runway.
On Friday, after beating Diana Shnaider in three sets, Townsend advanced to the round of 16, hoping to end defending champion Sabalenka’s winning streak at Flushing Meadows. However, on Sunday, Sabalenka hammered the American in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3, to reach the quarterfinals of the tournament for a sixth consecutive year.
Now fans have doubled down on Townsend’s all-black ensemble. She wore a long black hooded coat with gold necklaces.
“What a ridiculous outfit! Just to get knocked out in two sets.”
Other players, including Naomi Osaka, have also drawn attention for their choice of outfit for their entry walk.
Despite reaching her second consecutive fourth round at the US Open, Taylor Townsend fell to Aryna Sabalenka in straight sets. However, her post-match press conference began with a question about her walk-on outfit. Townsend spoke about the inspiration behind it and explained that the outfit was designed to be light while also giving her a dramatic vibe before the match.
“The inspiration behind that was really just something very beautiful and kind of dramatic and giving its own moment. The dress was really pretty. The dress kind of had all the elements that I wanted: pleats and fringe movement.”
“I felt like it was, you know, you’re taking something off and then you’re like, boom, I’m ready for war. I’m ready to go.”
Townsend has been open about using fashion as a way to fully express herself.
