Roosters ‘unhappy’ with shock HIA ruling as club intends to challenge call for grand final

The Roosters will be hoping Connor Watson gets clearance from an independent neurologist this week in order to play in next Sunday’s grand final.
Watson, who is Dragons-bound in 2027, may have played his final game for the club following a contentious concussion ruling that the club is expected to challenge with the NRL.

Watson was forced from the ground for a HIA in the 32nd minute against the Dolphins after copping a knock when attempting to dice on a loose ball.
Initially deemed a Category 2, the independent doctor ruled Watson had suffered a Category 1 head knock instead.
The process to clear Watson involves a meeting with an independent neurologist, who will determine whether the utility is right to play.
Whether Watson passed his concussion test post-match is unknown but according to CODE, the 30-year-old reportedly fears he will be rubbed out of the biggest game of his career.
Earlier this season, Manly’s Tolu Koula was cleared to play for the Sea Eagles eight days after suffering a Category 1 head knock in Origin.
The Roosters will be out to gain the same exemption Koula received in order for Watson to take his place in the decider.
Fox League’s Jake Duke reported that the Roosters bench “weren’t happy” with the independent doctor’s decision on Friday night to change Watson’s HIA grading.

“The Roosters bench were not happy that was upgraded to Category 1 and have already signalled their intention to challenge it,” Duke said.
The Roosters booked their grand final ticket with a dominant 36-20 win over the Dolphins.
In his post match press conference, Roosters coach Trent Robinson revealed that Watson was undergoing more tests at the stadium.
The Roosters will appeal the Category 1 ruling depending on how Watson’s tests go.
“He’s in the middle of doing his tests now to see where he’s at so it’s still watch this space on Connor,” Robinson said.
“It depends on how his tests go now. We’ll see how it goes ovet the next half an hour.”
Facing the mandatory 11-day stand down period, Watson will be available for selection is if the Roosters are able to seek a medical clearance for him to play.
If it isn’t able to be overturned, Watson has likely played his final game for the club.
Watson is heading to the Dragons next year on a one-year stopgap deal before joining the PNG Chiefs from 2028.
